Your good friend, Roby died unexpectedly in North Vancouver at 9:10pm on April 30th while with her husband. She was 86 years old and died from a serious heart problem. She was a gregarious, loving woman who had numerous friends in North Vancouver and in Germany, where she was born in 1938. You who get this letter all grew to love her as a special, kind friend. I loved her beyond description during our wonderful 63 year marriage. We planned one last epic vacation this summer, but her kind, loving heart sadly gave way to an aortic rupture.
She suffered as a starving child during the war years and their aftermath that killed her father. Luckily, Roby survived until after the war when I met her and married her in Heidelberg in 1960, while I was studying German language and history at Heidelberg University, where she was studying languages. We have lived a wonderful life together of studies and travel since then.
Roby was the mother of our son Torsten, a distinguished professor of experimental medicine at the University of British Columbia, and our other son Norman, who got a law degree from Queens University, but sadly died from bacterial pneumonia in 2020.
Those of you who grew to know Roby will know why my marriage to her lasted 63 years and why I am still crying rivers of tears when I think of her.
Thank you for being a friend to Roby.
