Elwood (EC) Wylie passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021 in the company of his two youngest daughters. He was predeceased by his loving wife Gloria, his parents, Clifford and Edith; his brother, Cecil; and his nephew, Rob. He is survived by his son, Doug (Eileen); his daughters, Shannon (Ken), Sharmaine (Braden) and Donna (Verna); nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Elwood was born in April 1933 in Donovan SK. As a young man he attended the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained his technical diploma in Radiography. He worked for seven years as a radiography technician at Saskatoon City Hospital, before moving his family to Vancouver in 1965. He was Manager of Radiology at Vancouver General Hospital for 28 years until his retirement. During his time at VGH he led a full re-design of the Radiology Department and was instrumental in bringing in new technology.
Elwood was a true sports enthusiast and particularly enjoyed men’s fastball and golf. Throughout his life he joined many teams, and for a time was a professional fastball umpire. His love of sports never waned; he and Gloria enjoyed their seniors’ bowling league and Elwood spent many happy days on the golf course with the senior men’s golf club at Coyote Creek in Surrey. He always had an eye on the TV and an ear to the radio, listening to the NY Yankees, the Blue Jays or the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Another of his passions was travelling the world with his wife Gloria. They frequented the beaches of Hawaii and the beer halls of Munich – even backpacking across Europe with good friends. He and Gloria were also long time members of the Burnaby Army and Navy Veteran’s Club and Elwood served in the men’s club . Friends and family will remember Elwood’s love of large gatherings full of laughter and often a good game of Schmeer.
We will miss you Dad. We will miss your gentle, humble spirit at our family gatherings. We will miss your unforgettable laugh. You will be forever in our hearts and we are glad you are now at peace with Mom.
Due to Covid, a private family interment and memorial will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. In Elwood's memory, and in honour of his lifelong love of sport, the family would appreciate memorial donations to KidSport Canada.
