Steve was born on Jan 4, 1924, the son of the late William A Sackel and Ann Veith Sackel of Buchanan NY. He spent his childhood in Buchanan NY. He joined the Marines during WWII after graduating from Hendrick Hudson HS. Steve was very proud of being a prior Marine. He was a Pfc radioman, nicknamed “Sparks”, with the Forth Marine division during WWII. He fought in the Pacific Theater, to include the islands of Tinian, Saipan, Kwajalein Atoll, and at the Battle of Iwo Jima, in which he saw the flag being raised on Mt Suribaci.
After the war he married his high school sweetheart, the late Elizabeth“Bess” W. Miller. They eventually settled in Shrub Oak, NY where they raised their two daughters. He worked his way up the NY Telephone Company (AT&T), by hard work and advanced schooling, from lineman to a supervising engineer by the time he retired. Part of his job with the phone company in the early days of his career involved him assisting with transmission of radio shows, and also the early days of tv. He enjoyed recounting stories of having met through his work Edward R Murrow, Paul and Joanne Newman, Burgess Meridith, and President Eisenhower, to name a few. He would also often advise, when cautioned by his daughter to not climb ladders in his later years, that he had climbed 100 ft radio towers.
His beloved wife of 59 years, Bess, passed in 2006. In 2008, in their 80s, he married the lovely Agnes Lucy Sanchez, whom he had known since childhood. Over his lifetime he enjoyed many pursuits, among them gardening, skiing, jogging, guitar and flying lessons. He was an avid reader, as anyone who knew him could tell by his book collection.
He is survived by his wife Agnes, his daughters Peggy Ann Carbone (Robert) of Richmond, NH, and Catherine Mary Friedman (Douglas) of Bolivia, NC. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Carbone St George (Christopher), Robert Carbone Jr (Cathy), Nadine Carbone Mack (Shawn), John Paul Carbone (Angela), Benjamin Friedman (Kelly), and Joshua Friedman (Vicki), and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church on 240 11th Street in Verplank NY on June 25th at 11am. Burial following at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Verplank.
