Gary was born on May 6, 1947, the fifth child of Francis and Frances Showalter. The Lord called him home to heaven, with no more pain, on November 19, 2019.
Gary graduated from Chamberlain Vocational High School in Washington, DC, and went on to work in the patent printing industry. He worked as cameraman, pressman, and supervisor. He always had an eye for detail and would catch mistakes as he checked for quality of work and accuracy. He married Linda, and they were together for 45 years before she was called to heaven.
Golf was Gary’s hobby and passion. He started caddying as a young teen to make extra money and loved his time at the golf course. He learned to play and did well in junior tournaments. He was even offered a golf scholarship to University of Maryland, but turned it down because he didn’t want to continue in school, in favor of working. As he aged and couldn’t play golf anymore, he loved watching baseball. He had been a fan of the Senators many years ago and had attended some games. He was so excited that the Nationals won the World Series this year.
He is survived by son Alan Showalter, daughter-in-law Barbara Showalter, grandchildren Tatiana (Mendez), Stephanie, Megan, and Justin Showalter, and great granddaughter Giana Mendez of Kissimmee, FL; and daughter Lorie Calderwood, son-in-law Jason Calderwood, and grandchildren Micah and Christa Calderwood of Dunkirk, MD. Also surviving are brother Frank (Janette) Showalter, and sisters Jeanne (Tommy) Martin and Cindi (Scott) Porter.
