Mary Magdalene “Maggie” Gunter Doussan was born December 12, 1935 in Harperville, MS and passed away on February 19, 2021 at the age of 85. Since 1953, she resided in New Orleans, LA and Metairie, LA. Maggie will be greatly missed by her husband Albert Francis “Bert” Doussan, III, her children, Sheryl Doussan Galiano (husband Nicky), Alison Page Doussan, Herman A. Doussan (wife Michelle), Albert F. “Bert” Doussan, IV (wife Loann), Randy H. Doussan Spears (wife Rosalie), her grandchildren Courtney Lee Morgan, Ashley Lauren Bean (husband Daniel), Spencer Wayne Doussan, Brittany Marie Doussan, Ross Wain Doussan (wife Matlin), Abbie Lutenbacher Monjure (husband Kevin), Kori Celeste Lutenbacher, Katie Galiano, her great-grandchildren Nicole, Brylee, Hartlee, Kaitlyn, Blake, Aubrey, Allison, Addilyn, her brother Jarrell Jerome Gunter, sisters Patricia Ann Gunter Adams (husband David), Linda Gunter Kennedy, and Evelyn “Nita” Gunter Stinson as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pearline Hunter Gunter and R.B. Gunter, brothers Robert Clyde Gunter, George Henry Gunter, Willis Horace Gunter, sister Mavis Lynn Gunter Weaver and her brother-in-laws Elton Weaver, and James Stinson.
While attending high school in Harperville, MS, Maggie fell in love with athletics. She enjoyed roller skating and playing basketball, volleyball, and softball. She sang in the Methodist Church. After graduation, she moved to New Orleans and was selected to sing in Dr. Billy Graham’s 1500-voice choir.
Maggie worked for Metro Golden Mayer Pictures and New Orleans Freight Tariff Bureau. For 25 years, she worked as a legal secretary at the law firm of Phelps, Dunbar, Marks, Claverie and Sims. After retiring, she spent her time gardening, needle pointing, Cajun cooking, and making ceramics and porcelain pieces. She was a talented bowler, earning many trophies. Maggie was an avid Pelicans and Saints fan. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Her favorite charities were St. Jude, American Cancer Society, Raintree for Children, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Leukemia Society.
Maggie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service for Maggie on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 1 PM at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA, visitation will begin at 11:30 AM.
Burial will be private.
