Our history

Hardy Funeral Home was founded in 1929 by Harold Hardy, a man known for his dedication to families and his quiet compassion. Harold ran his namesake business for many years. In 1981, he partnered with another good man, J.B. Close. Together, they established Hardy-Close Funeral Home, a trusted name in the community for decades. They worked side by side, along with Morris Proffitt, a beloved funeral director and embalmer.

Harold died on Christmas Day in 1995. J.B. continued to serve families with the same care and integrity until he sold the business shortly before his death in June 2006.

In December 2014, Hardy-Close Funeral Home became part of Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home. Following the acquisition, the facility underwent thoughtful renovations, including new furnishings, an updated arrangement room, a new chapel and a modern fleet of vehicles—all to better serve families while honoring the legacy of Harold Hardy and J.B. Close.

Morris continued with the firm, caring for families until 2025, when Hardy-Close Funeral Home became part of the Dignity Memorial® network, blending the personal touch of a locally rooted family business with the added benefits of a trusted national provider.
