Captivating natural beauty

Throughout Lynnhurst Cemetery there are large oak, hemlock, dogwood and redbud trees that provide shade during hot Tennessee summers. The many manicured gardens provide quiet spots for reflection. Spring brings lush green lawns. Vibrant limelight hydrangeas emerge during the summer. In fall, shades of orange, red and gold erupt in the mountain ridge behind the cemetery.

Burial options to suit all needs

Mausoleum at Lynnhurst CemeteryThe cemetery property offers in-ground burial and above-ground entombment. Located a short walk from the funeral home, you will find our mausoleum complex, which includes cremation niches, cremation benches, and also private and semiprivate estates. The Adair Oak

A large white oak is estimated to have been growing at Lynnhurst Cemetery since 1777. Called the Adair Oak, the tree takes its name from John Adair, one of Fountain City’s founders. He was instrumental at the Battle of King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War and among the first permanent settlers of Knox County. He was also a delegate to the constitutional convention that founded the State of Tennessee in 1796.

In recognition of his dedication to the patriot cause, in 1788, North Carolina granted John 640 acres in what is now Knox County. Our great white oak marked the southeastern edge of that land. John's burial site is located under the mighty oak's canopy and is marked with an upright marker that bears his name and military service during the Revolutionary War.

The University of Tennessee's Tree Improvement Program has planted acorns from the Adair Oak at its Flint River Nursery in Georgia. The seedlings are part of research conducted by the program. Adair white oak trees from the program may someday be available to be planted on other sites at Lynnhurst Cemetery and throughout the Knoxville area.

We Honor Veterans level 2 badgeWe honor veterans

At Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home and Lynnhurst Cemetery, we understand the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families. As a Level Two Founding Community Partner with We Honor Veterans, our staff is knowledgeable in the benefits available to veterans and their families. With respect, integrity and dignity, we will walk you through the steps of creating a veteran's memorial service that truly honors the life and sacrifice of your loved one.

We also participate in the Dignity Memorial® Homeless Veterans Burial Program. The Homeless Veterans Burial Program was founded in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, local medical examiners, coroners, veterans advocates and veterans organizations on the belief that every veteran deserves a dignified and honorable burial. Through the program, homeless and indigent veterans who have no family to claim them are identified and provided with proper military burials.

We care about Knoxville

The commitment of Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home and Lynnhurst Cemetery to the families we serve and the community as a whole doesn’t end with a funeral service. We welcome everyone to the many annual events we host throughout the year.

The Veterans Day service in November honors those who have bravely served our country. In December, we host a non-denominational night of remembrance with sweet treats, seasonal music and a candle lighting ceremony. We know that the holidays can be tough for families who have lost loved ones, which is why we invite those we've served to join us as we celebrate life and gain a sense of friendship and healing.

In addition, our team members support the Knox County community by serving on various community boards and volunteering with local organizations.

History

Special landscaping feature at Lynnhurst CemeteryOur tradition of honest and caring professional service has been passed down through four generations of the Berry family. The Berry name has been synonymous with traditional funeral service in Knoxville since 1928, when Ralph L. Berry opened the Ralph L. Berry Funeral Home in the old South Knoxville Baptist Church on Sevier Avenue.

Growth and expansion

Many years later, Fred Berry decided to expand into other areas of Knoxville. In 1992, Berry Funeral Home and Lynnhurst Cemetery joined together and a year later, construction began on Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home on the grounds of Lynnhurst Cemetery. The chapel was dedicated on September 11, 1994 in honor of G. Edward Berry.

Founded in 1922, Lynnhurst Cemetery originally was named Resthaven Cemetery.

Today, Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home and Lynnhurst Cemetery are both members of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers.
