History

Now bringing area families unmatched services as part of the Dignity Memorial® network, Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation Center got its start in the 1950s.

The 1st funeral home

R. Jay Kraeer attended mortuary science school in Cincinnati and moved to Florida with his wife, Lorraine, in the late 1940s. He opened his and the city’s 1st funeral home in Pompano Beach in 1952, where visitations were held in the living room.

Expanding the business

Front exterior at Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation CenterIn 1957, Jay opened a 2nd funeral home in Boca Raton. It was followed by another Pompano Beach location (1961), a Deerfield Beach funeral home (1963), a Fort Lauderdale location (1966), a location in Margate (1972) and a Coral Springs funeral home (1980). By the time Jay sold the Kraeer funeral homes to a group of employees, there were 7 locations in Broward County. That group of new owners opened a location of Kraeer Mason Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Tamarac.

Meeting high expectations

Jay's high expectations of his team helped establish Kraeer Funeral Home as a trusted and compassionate provider. Jay himself was respected by his peers in the funeral industry, and they elected him president of the National Funeral Directors Association in 1976. He died in 2004, leaving his nephew Robert D. Russell to continue the Kraeer legacy. Robert, who lives in Fort Lauderdale with his wife, Kelli, still plays an active role in the funeral homes.
