History

The Cook-Walden Capital Parks legacy of service began in the late 1800s when Samuel E. Rosengren opened a downtown funeral home in the 400 block of Congress Street in Austin, which served the funeral needs of families in the growing state capital until 1920.

Charles Cook's contribution

Charles B. Cook purchased Rosengren's business and opened an opulent 3-story building located between the state capitol and the governor's mansion, which quickly became the largest and most prestigious provider of funeral and ambulance services in the community. Mr. Cook continued the tradition of providing the finest in care and service in Austin for more than 50 years.

The years of Charles Walden and expansion

Charles Walden purchased Cook Funeral Home in 1971, bringing 30 years of dedication and service to the business. Mr. Walden soon moved Cook-Walden Funeral Home from 11th and Colorado avenues to North Lamar Street, where it continues to be an Austin landmark.

Mr. Walden acquired 2 adjacent cemeteries on North I-35 and continued to expand the Cook-Walden name in 1985 with the acquisition of Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown and Young Funeral Home in Florence, along with the construction of Cook-Walden/Chapel of the Hills off Route 183 and Anderson Mill Road.

Forest Oaks Funeral Home & Cemetery in the Oak Hill area also became part of the Cook-Walden family in 1992.

The funeral home opens

In 1997, the jewel in the Cook-Walden crown, the 17,000-square-foot Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home, was added. This compassionate and caring funeral home was opened right on the grounds of Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.

With our rich history, our teams still continue to thoughtfully and compassionately support people through this emotionally challenging stage of life. We'll be here for years to come doing the exact same thing: caring for families in the Austin area.
