We celebrate life

Let's start with a story. At Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, we like to think of ourselves as expert storytellers. Our imaginative team takes all of the elements that make a person special, such as a favorite hobby or lifelong passion, and weave them together to create a singular memorial like no other.

Was he an avid horseback rider? We can display his treasured saddle in the chapel and have a procession with his trusty stallion leading the way. Did she make the best pasta in the state of Washington? We can have a catered spaghetti dinner and send guests home with a jar of her famous tomato sauce.

History

Founded by brothers Howard and Elwood Ball, Ball & Dodd Funeral Home has provided a high level of professionalism and integrity to Spokane-area families since 1938.

The Ball Brothers and the founder of Father's Day

The Ball brothers partnered with a well-known member of Spokane: Sonora Smart Dodd and her husband, John Bruce Dodd. Sonora, who held her father in great esteem, approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance about a day for fatherhood to be recognized. She was responsible for the celebration of the first Father's Day, which was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.

Over time, the idea of Father's Day became popular and embraced across the nation. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson sent a telegraph to Spokane praising its Father's Day services. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. In 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year.
