Personalized funeral and memorial services

Reception room at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home and CemeteryOur focus at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home is to go above and beyond to create truly personalized funeral and memorial services. In short, we celebrate life. This means different things for different people, but for us it always entails discovering what a person loved, such as a treasured poem, favourite colour or lifelong hobby, and then incorporating those elements into a service with exquisite attention to detail.

What might your loved one's memorial look like? For a motorcycle enthusiast we might plan a processional of bikes. For an artist, we can arrange an art show. We surprised a family with a meal served on their mom’s favorite dishware, complete with the tomato juice she poured every Sunday. Whatever a person’s passions, we make it a point to showcase the things that someone cared about.

History

Cemetery grounds at Thomson In The Park CemeteryWhat is now Thomson in the Park Cemetery was founded in 1953 on 34 acres of farmland in Fort Garry.

During the 1950s, Winnipeg's Smith family ran multiple cemeteries in the city, including Elmwood Cemetery. The Smiths eventually sold this cemetery, then called Garry Memorial Park, to the city of Fort Garry. The cemetery became synonymous with quality and grew to become a respected part of the community.

Construction on the funeral home began in 2002. It opened in 2003 to meet the funeral and cremation needs of Winnipeg and surrounding communities.

Joining Thomson

In the early 2000s, Garry Memorial Park and the funeral home joined with the oldest funeral business in the city, Thomson. Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery carry on a deep tradition of unparalleled service established under the Thomson name.

"Kathleen Epp 1935 to 2021 - It was less than 3 months prior that we buried our Father - Arthur Epp. This has been such a very difficult time losing both parents within 3 months. How does one navigate the emotions of the death of a second parent when all the firsts of the first parent have not been experienced or processed? Covid-19 restrictions had slightly lifted and this time our sister from out of province could be at the Funeral Service along with our spouses. We were grateful for that. The Laminated Obituary turned out well as we worked with Kelsey and Bailey to get it just right for our Mom's love of the yellow rose. On the day of the Funeral Service, Aaron asked if he could place a rose from the casket spray in Mom hands just before he closed the casket. That was a fitting gesture as our Mom grew many flowers over the years, but the rose was her favourite. Even though our funeral needs were not within the city limits of Winnipeg all went smoothly. At our Father's Funeral Service, my Mom was very impressed with Funeral Director - Aaron Bowskill. She said, 'I want Aaron as my Funeral Director when my time comes'. And she got her wish. Aaron's down to earth manner had made quite an impression on our Mom, which truly warmed my heart. From the moment I called Donna Olson, General Manager at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home and Cemetery on Saturday morning to ask - 'What do we do?' My Mom has died at home, (about an hour and a half outside the city of Winnipeg) to the Funeral Service at Grace Mennonite Church in Winkler and Grave-side at Graysville Mennonite Church Cemetery - my family experienced true professionalism and grace. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
