David "Deva" Nasan Moorthy

David had a distinguished career as an educator in the Abbotsford and Langley School District. He started his career at Matsqui Elementary School and became a Vice-Principal at Betty Gilbert Elementary School at twenty-nine. He became a principal a few years later. David was the former Principal of Mt. Lehman Elementary, Dormick Park Elementary, Bakerview Elementary, and Upper Sumas Elementary in Abbotsford. He was the Principal at Parkside Elementary in Langley for three years. David was a phenomenal educator and received many accolades from his students, and was known for his excellent relationships with parents and staff.

David was a soccer phenomenon. Growing up in Abbotsford he played for the Whitecaps reserves at 18. After graduating from Highschool, he obtained a soccer scholarship from the University of Victoria. However, his career was cut short in his early twenties due to knee injuries. David also wrestled in high school and was heavily involved in weightlifting for most of his teenage and adult years. David was a dedicated coach and spent many years as a coach for rep teams and club teams for the Abbotsford Soccer Association. His true love was coaching his daughter Nada for many years.

David’s greatest gift was to make everyone he knew feel cared for and appreciated. He loved being a father, uncle, brother and son. He liked to joke with people and share a good laugh. It is no secret that he significantly impacted his students, friends and his family. He lived by the motto, “people don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care about them.” David’s compassion also translated into his love for animals. He was a genuine “Dog Whisperer” and was devoted to his former dogs, Cera and Kassie.

David is survived by his wife Raylene for twenty-seven years and his daughters, Nada and Hallie, his mother, Kamala Moorthy, and his brothers Mohan (Indira) and Balan (Shalegh). He was predeceased by his father the late Sam Moorthy. He will be dearly missed by multiple uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, friends and of course, the thousands of students and fellow educators he impacted over the years.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Cascade Community Church at 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford, B.C. In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the following charities: BC Mental Health and Substance Abuse Foundation, The BC Heart and Stroke Foundation or The BC SPCA in Abbotsford.
