Gwendolyn Roberta Pym

20 April, 193711 September, 2020

Gwen was born April 20, 1937 on Vancouver Island, BC and was an only child. When in elementary school, she and her parents moved to Cloverdale. She loved the outdoors and working with the tools her dad taught her how to use, which may explain why she would joke about being called a tom boy.

Gwen completed high school and went on to earn her BA in Education from UBC. She then studied at Prairie Bible Institute for 4 years while teaching in the elementary school. From there, she went on to French language school in Switzerland for a year before going to Zaire, Africa where she served for 18 years as a missionary with African Inland Mission, teaching Bible in the high school and training teachers.

In 1992, she made the difficult decision to return home to Abbotsford to help her dad care for her mom who had Alzheimer’s. During those years and until retirement, Gwen worked as Director of Abbotsford Alzheimer’s Society.

Over the years, Gwen attended Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church (now Mill Lake Church) where she actively chaired the Missions Committee, was involved in Bible studies, participated in Women’s Ministries, worked with seniors, and taught children in Awana and Sunday School.

When Gwen moved to Maplewood House in July of 2013, it was with the knowledge that she too had Alzheimer’s and needed help. We want to thank all the nurses and staff at Maplewood for their diligent and loving care of Gwen over these past 7+ years. You truly made a difference.

Gwen had a servant heart, gentle spirit, joyful laugh, and beautiful smile. Though we will miss her, we know that she is now home with Jesus and at peace after a fruitful life that gave out of her love for her Lord and Savior.
