She is survived by her husband Dan, four sons, Larry (Edna), Gordon (Gwen), John (Sue), Ron (Karen), brothers Henry (Elizabeth) and Frank (Esther), sister Charlotte (Bill) eleven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and extended family.
Helen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 11, 1929 to John and Amalia Martens, who moved to Greendale B.C. shortly after Helen’s birth.
Helen’s life is a fascinating story of faithful loving service to her family, to others and to Her Lord. When her mother tragically died in 1944, Helen only 14 years of age assumed the care of the home and her younger siblings. After marriage to Dan Nickel in 1949 and the birth of her four sons, Helen and Dan felt the Lord calling them to overseas missions. Over a period of 20 years extending from 1965 to 1985 they served with distinction and great sacrifice in the countries of India and Indonesia. When health issues required their return to Canada they continued reaching out to the local immigrant community through their pastoral position at the Bakerview MB church. Even after retirement, Helen participated in 7 mission trips to India, and was involved with Dan in compassion ministries, loving and encouraging recovering alcoholics, prisoners, single mothers and many others in need. In 2001 Helen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and entered Maplewood house in 2008. We sincerely thank the staff who cared for our Helen with tenderness and love.
Helen will be fondly remembered for her exemplary life, her infectious joy, and laughter always bubbling out of a heart of pure love. We anticipate our joyful reunion with her in the Lord’s presence where she is now at rest.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 pm in Bakerview MB Church, 2285 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.
