Maria Turra

Maria was born in Rocca di Arsie, Bulluno, Italy, on July 3, 1932, to Christiano and Angela Sartor. She grew up in a family of eight brothers and sisters. She survived the war and went on to work in northern Italy and Switzerland before meeting her husband, Antonio (Tony).

While staying behind in Switzerland, Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1952. Maria followed, arriving on Christmas Day 1955 where they settled on a small farm in Abbotsford and together raised a family, growing all they needed from the land.

Maria was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of the Catholic Women’s League, where she volunteered for many activities such as bazaars, dinners and visiting the ill. Maria and Antonio were also members of the Bellunesi Nel Mondo society, where they always remembered their heritage.

Maria was a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and a wonderful friend to all who knew her. Maria was especially dedicated to her family. She dearly loved and cared for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Her lasting legacy is her love of life, family, friends and especially her faith in Christ Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

Maria was predeceased by her husband Antonio in 2013 and by her granddaughter Dominique in 2025. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons, Alfonso (Martene), Ernie (Ilona), Carlo (Tracey); Grandchildren, Christopher (Anne), Anthony (Karen), Chad (Pamela), Trevor, Hayley; Great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Elliana, Aiden, Isaac, Dane and Riesling; and many relatives in Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Australia and the US.

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, care staff and friends at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Menno Place for their kindness, gentleness and loving care.

Although we have lost an amazing, loving person, we have gained a prayerful soul in heaven.

Prayer will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at St. Ann's Catholic Church,33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford, BC, beginning at 7:00pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue in Abbotsford, BC, on Friday, October 23 beginning at 11:00am.

Interment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery on Friday, October 23, 2026 at 12:30pm.
