It is with profound sadness and a deeply broken heart that we announce the sudden passing of Robert Edward Eaton, who was taken from us far too soon on Thursday, July 9th, following a catastrophic heart attack.
He was on his way to celebrate his granddaughter Isla's 15th birthday when he collapsed just outside his home. His neighbors, acting quickly and with great compassion, called 911 immediately. Paramedics responded and worked tirelessly to save him, but despite their heroic efforts, he could not be revived. Found beside him was the birthday card he had chosen for Isla. In many ways, that small card tells you everything you need to know about who my dad was. Even in his final moments, his thoughts were with the people he loved most.
A Father, A Grandfather, A Cornerstone
Born in Toronto on October 27th, 1944, to Wilbur and Madeline Eaton, my dad was, above all else, a family man in the truest and most devoted sense of the word. He was a loving father and a grandfather whose greatest joy in life came from being present for every moment that mattered — and many that others might have overlooked. He never missed a hockey game, mine or his grandkids'. He was always in the stands cheering at softball. He showed up for birthdays, graduations, and every milestone in between — not out of obligation, but out of pure, genuine love. His grandchildren were his pride, his delight, and his greatest source of happiness.
Just weeks before his passing, my dad stood beaming beside his oldest granddaughter, Olivia, at her high school graduation — what would become the last photograph ever taken of him. It is a picture that has grown immeasurably more precious with each passing day. That afternoon, the school's principal addressed a crowd of thousands and spoke about the importance of character — singling out Olivia as a student who embodied that value completely. His pride in that moment is something I will carry with me forever.
The Man Behind the Memories
To me, he was far more than a father. He was a source of strength, wisdom, and unwavering support— the steady, honest voice during life's most difficult moments, and the example against which I measured my own character and choices. Stubborn at times, fiercely loyal always, and deeply committed to those he loved, Robert passed on values that will live on through his grandchildren and me for generations to come. He was the kind of man who showed up. Who told the truth. Who loved without condition and gave generously without hesitation.
His Family
Preceded in death by the love of his life, Lynda Joan, Robert will be forever loved and deeply missed. He is survived by his son, Jason Thomas (Tom); his daughter-in-law, Laura Kimberly; and his four beloved grandchildren: Olivia (Liv), Isla, Emerson (EJ), and Charlie. His kindness, loyalty, and love touched many lives, leaving a legacy.
Celebration of Life
The Eaton family warmly invites all those whose lives Robert touched to join them in honouring his memory at a Memorial Celebration of Life on Tuesday, July 21st at 2:00 p.m, at Henderson's Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC with a Reception to follow. Tom and Laura will open their home to family and friends on Tuesday, July 21st at 5:00 p.m. The address will be shared at the funeral home or by contacting Tom at [email protected]
It would mean a great deal to the family to be surrounded by those who knew and loved Robert, as they come together to share memories, celebrate his remarkable life, and say their final goodbyes. All are welcome to gather, reflect, and find comfort in one another's company as they honour a man who was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
The family requests that any charitable gifts be made to one of the following organizations, Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation of Canada or Diabetes Canada. Links to these websites are provided below the obituary.
Thank you for your kindness and support during this time. These charities were important to my dad.
A Note of Gratitude
The family wishes to express their heartfelt and sincere gratitude for the extraordinary outpouring of love, prayers, messages, and support already received. During tremendous grief, the kindness of so many has been a true and meaningful source of comfort.
Even in his final moments, his thoughts were with his family.
Robert Eaton — forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Dad.
With love, respect, and deep sadness,
Tom, Laura, Liv, Isla, EJ & Charlie
