Sylvia was an inspirational lady.  We are thinking about you Sylvia at this time of year, as this is the time we used to receive one of your beautiful hand made Christmas cards.  Inside the card there was always a lovely letter telling us all about what our lovely nephews and niece had been getting up to throughout the year.  Also this time of year always reminds us of the years you were in the Salvation Army in the U.K. You will always be fondly remembered but so sadly missed. TRIBUTE TO MUM
Dear mum, words cannot express the love I have for you and how much I miss you.   For the unconditional love that you gave to Dad, David, Ian and me. You touched the hearts of everyone you have met over your 92 years.  The happy, loving childhood you gave to the three of us is priceless and I am sure with more sacrifices than we will ever know.  Your many thoughtful acts like in the winter you wouldn't go to bed until you made sure that our school clothes were put to warm ready for us to wear in the morning.  Then with only a few hours sleep you would get up and make the porridge to make sure we had a warm breakfast before we went to school. You would always go without to make sure the three of us, and Dad of course, had everything we needed.   I have too many happy memories to mention of times spent on holiday, shopping or in the latter years just simply watching TV together. The birthday parties you would always make so much fun and invite all the neighbourhood children. You would always have a smile on your beautiful face and never had a bad word to say about anyone.  You put your heart and sole into everything you did.   You always had others in mind when making your crafts whether it was with your ceramics, sewing, knitting or cooking.  I can only aspire to have just a little of your compassionate, thoughtful and generous nature.  I feel so blessed to have been your daughter and that we could spend your twilight years together.

Dear Aunty Sylvia,
You and Uncle Roy, David, Ian and Lynn were a vital, much loved and very happy part of our lives as we grew up in Cadishead and I'm so glad for those many happy memories our two families shared. 
When I think of you I have to smile because that's what you always made me feel like doing - even when as a little girl, I was in pain, after being hit in the face with a rock! You patched me up and by the end I was crying with laughter and almost forgot about my injury.
So many times we came to play, or just pop in to Essex Gardens where it was so comfy, warm and welcoming and having a good laugh was always a guarantee where you and/ or Uncle Roy, in fact the whole lot of you including your own mum, (nana) were concerned.
Thank you for these lovely memories Aunty Sylvia and there are more recent ones too which I shall always cherish and they are of the phone calls you  and Uncle Roy made to our mum, Jean, when she was so sadly afflicted with dementia, yet you still called, despite the distance and Mum would respond to the warmth and cheer of hearing your loved and familiar voices. Such love, such thoughtfulness and such understanding are remembered with gratitude and although I am so sad you are no longer with us, I am certain that you are now at peace and thank God for the blessing and the joy of knowing and loving you dearest Aunty Sylvia.

Hi Mum,
Sorry it's taken so long to write down the words that would express how much I love and miss you mum, I guess I've been looking at this Guest Book as a final goodbye, and once I press "submit" you'll be lost to me forever, ever since you passed i have been in a kind of daze remembering all kinds of good memories that were only possible because you made them possible mum!!! you are everything a mother can be, you are totally selfless, your entire life was spent making sure that the needs of the whole family was taken care of before your own,.. and the photographs!!?, all those photographs!! how did you get us to stay so still for that many times .. lol (just so you know mum, lol means "laugh out loud"),  
  I now realize that by writing down these few words others will know what a wonderful person you were, I have often been told how lucky I was growing up with a mum & dad like you two, but I make sure they know it was all because of you mum.
  The sandwiches!!, all of those sarnies!! just from 1966 when i started work to getting married in 1972 you must have made me approximately 1,300 butties!!, then when you left Australia and came to Canada in 1990 .. you started again with the sandwiches!!, they have to be in the thousands and that was just for me!!, dad could put them away.. you loved feeding people,
   Remember when we were kids out for a picnic and we woke up that homeless person  who was sleeping in the bush's .. next thing he's sitting there having a cup of tea and eating one of my sandwiches!!.. and all you could do was look at the size of his feet!!, you were always accepting of others regardless of their appearance. 
well mum, by now i'm sure you've met up with our David, Dad and Gran, and i hope they (Heaven) have provided you with a maid you've certainly earned one ... let someone else make the sarnies.. lol.

Hi Dad,
I know it's taken me a while to include my tribute but every time I would try I couldn't see the page for tears. There are so many stories I could tell like your car breaking down or running out of gas nearly every journey we would make or the rules you always wanted to change when we were playing games. There are so many cherished memories of my childhood.  All the holidays we spent together throughout the UK.  There were many years that we lived thousands of miles apart but you were always in my mind and in my heart and still are.  I will always cherish the time we spent together when you and mum moved to BC when I was able to look after you both as my way of thanking you for all the love and care you gave to not only me but to Ian and David.  Realizing now the sacrifices you both made for the three of us.  It is heartwarming to read all the tributes family and friends have written and to know that you touched many people with your humour and kindness.  I am sure you are still trying to change the rules and having the last word.  As I write this I know mum is with you now so she will keep you in line along with Martin and David.  I miss you all and think of you every day.  Love from your "guardian angel" and "favourite daughter" Lynn.

Your Mum was a wonderful lady.
Through Ian, I met Sylvia and Roy during my middle to late teens. With our other friends (usually 6 or more), we would descend on 8 Essex Gardens most Monday evenings and plant ourselves in the back room listening to Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, Beach Boys, The Who and Pink Floyd.  
Sylvia would always make tea, coffee and sandwiches for all of us and never complain.
Her home was always welcoming to all of us, it was such a happy place with Sylvia, Roy, David, Ian, Lynn and Blanch.
Sylvia was such a hard worker; one memory is of her walking up Dudley Road with 2 full bags of food after coming from Warrington hospital after a full day of taking care of people.
She welcomed all of us again at their homes in South Wales and Amherstburg with the same open arms, warm heart and of course, tea, lots of baked goods and good food.
Sylvia was such a warm, kind hearted and special person. She will be missed by everyone.

Dear Ian and Lynn, Sylvia meant a great deal to our family. She always greeted us with a warm hug and a smile. We loved her kindness, gentleness and giving spirit. Of course her cooking was world renowned! From trifle to pies to sandwiches, we all ate more than our fair share! She was like a second Mom to Stuart, as she had known him almost his whole life. We will miss her, but our lives are so blessed having known her. Thank you Sylvia!

My dearest Auntie Sylvia, I have so many fond memory's where do I start. I can remember being a very young child and Auntie Sylvia & Uncle Roy coming on Christmas day to give us our gifts, on the year im remenising about i got a golden lantern that changed colours on the ceiling at bedtime i cherrished it for years. Then in my teens i would ride my bicycle from Irlam to northwhich and was fed sunday lunch and cakes she was the best cook and baker ever. Then in my adult life i always waited in anticipation at christmas time for Auntie Sylvias hand crafted Christmas card with a lovely letter of whats happened through the year,with words of wisdom and incouragement for me, and always a photo or two inside. You will both be sadly missed but never ever forgotten xxx

 You have lost a wonderful Mother and I have lost a wonderful sister, she was beautiful and had an inner beauty,I remember she looked after us
after my father died my mother worked at a munitions factory,then I went
into boarding school in 1939 Sylvia went into the ATS then like ships in  night I went into the forces I went to Germany and Sylvia was released
but she always wrote me.
I remember how our children to Christmas time when Roy and Sylvia
would roll up with presents.
There are lots of memories, Roy digging his pit in the garage, if you fell in
you didn't get out and his flamethrower means of clearing the long grass in the back yard, between school and the forces I was building an old bike
from parts Sylvia asked me when it would be finished, I said it needed new tires she took the size from the old one's, took off and bought me two new ones thereby  earning my undying love and gratitude.
I have all these memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

They were once-in-a-lifetime neighbours to all humans and pets at Richmond Terrace in Amhertsburg.  Max, our Dachshund, visited Sylvia as often as possible and loved her hospitality - as did we all! I first met Roy at the building firm where I worked, within a short time we soon became friends, he was such a likeable person, always happy and nothing was too much for him, he would help anyone.   Of all the memorable laughs we had together, the famous one was when Roy came down to help me fit a bathroom suite at a house owned by two gay lads.  I had already taken out the old suite and was beginning to fit the new toilet, we had knocked a hole through the wall for the new soil pipe and were about to fit the new toilet onto the new plastic soil pipe outside the house, I was outside up the ladder and Roy was inside the house ready to push the toilet onto the pipe, Roy pushed and pushed but it would not go on, so I realised that the rubber ring on the soil pipe must need lubricating, (we usually used washing up liquid to do this job) so I shouted through the hole in the wall to Roy "IS THAT FAIREY UP THERE? no reply! "WHERE'S THAT FAIREY" I shouted again, still no reply so I peered through the hole and all I could see was Roys face with a strange look on it and his shoulders were shaking as though he was trying not to laugh.  "STOP MESSING ABOUT AND GO AND FIND THE FAIREY" I shouted from outside, when I looked through the hole again I could see tears in Roys eyes but still no reply, I then decided to go inside and get the Fairey soap liquid myself, when I entered the bathroom there was Roy curled up on the floor hysterical with laughter "what's wrong with you" I said.  It was then that Roy told me that one of the young lads had returned unknown to me and had been standing next to Roy inside the bathroom when I was shouting for the Fairey liquid.
Roy always looked on the bright side of things whereas I always seemed to look on the downside and one day nothing was going right for me and I said to Roy "It can't be done I can't do it, Roy then calmly began to recite this little ditty to me, which to this day has stayed in my mind.

I always remember Lynn's stories of her Dad, Roy, riding his bicycle until the ripe age of 80+ and thinking what a vibrant man he must be. And then when the two of you came to the coast and I met you both, Roy definitely lived up to what I had imagined.  He was such a happy and friendly man with a great sense of humour.  Always ready with a hug and certainly enjoyed meeting new people. I am so happy I had the pleasure of knowing Roy.  Love Dawn

What to say Sylvia , our hearts go out to you .
We remember trips into the hills with portable BBQ in tow and a couple of beers for the boys & wine for the girls.
Trips to Cervantes to visit Grand Ma Watkins some times accompanied by Margaret my mother on one of her visits ,Roy's surprise when on one trip we bowled over three Roos in one hit that as Roy put it came out of nowhere.
The odd touring trip to Kalgoorlie going down the tourist mine , on to Esperance and the crystal clear waters in the surrounding bays and the Pink Lake , then onto Albany , where we explored the old army barracks ,looking out over King George sound remembering the convoys that assembled here carrying Australian Troops Gallipoli, on to Walpole and the trip around the Walpole inlet being given a running commentary by Rick Muir who was almost as quick witted as Roy , Roy's joy when he got the chance to drive Cherry's Chrysler , the fun we had looking out for old derelict buildings which as Roy put we could renovate , one of these was an old timber shack in the middle of a bog which we passed on our trips on the way out, in later years I would pass this shack on a daily basis often thinking about Roy, to my surprise it was renovated , Roy would be pleased to hear that who ever did it didn't make to bad a job of it.
Roy who helped me turn a old house 37 Wilkie Avenue Yanchep into a home who suggested that the front entrance should be at the half floor return landing , Roy who found the imposing timber & Glass front door Roy who spent a whole week end cutting out the double brick wall installing a couple of steel lintels and the door frame  with me as his assistant keeping me entertained with his sense of humour whilst covered from head to foot in red brick dust. Roy who taught me patience and shared his knowledge with me, Roy who quietly fitted a glass panel in the back door when I said in passing that I would like to let a little more light into the family room downstairs.
The feeling of emptiness when Roy & Sylvia moved to Canada we missed you both.
The kindness that you Sylvia and Roy showed to Maxine & Brad after their tree planting adventure in Canada when they arrived on your door step as you both said looking like something the cat dragged in , Max & Brad still talk about the food you had pre prepared for them whilst they house sat for you for four weeks .
And Roy mate , I still have your 1 & 1/8TH inch Masonry drill sorry , let me know if you need it.
Sylvia , we only had Roy around us for  short time but we enjoyed every minute of our time with him .
Look after you self Sylvia and we will see you in 2015.

I am so sad to hear of Roy's passing. Roy was a treasured member at Rosewood Co-op for many years. He was a hard worker who helped keep our units in top shape. A huge hole was left in the Co-op when Roy and Sylvia moved away and things have never been quite the same.
On a personal level, Roy gave me lots of laughs and some much needed sympathy when times were difficult. I will always remember Roy with great fondness and respect.

A tribute to Grandad Roy (Feb 22, 1922 – Sept 3, 2014)
My grandparents were very present in my earliest memories. Upon our immigration from Great Britain when I was three years old, it wasn't long into our Australian journey that I had all four of my grandparents out in Perth, supporting my mum and dad with bringing up my sister Kristi and me. Kristi was a nightmare; I was an angel by the way. They provided lifts in and out to kindergarten, school and sporting commitments and also attended those schooling milestones.
Two busy working parents require these supports and I fondly remember playing in the front or backyards at Nanna Syl and Grandad Roy's houses either with them, by myself or with my mates both after school and on weekends. Play times were interspersed with calls inside to sample any number of baked goodness that had been produced in the kitchen.
Christmas Eve sleep over's were also taken advantage of to allow full setup of piles of Christmas presents as we slept.

My strongest association I have with Grandad Roy was his shed. I'm pretty sure it's not just that I was young and small, because I can put other elements in to size context, but his sheds were massive! And full! There was every woodworking tool that you could imagine in there and I won't attempt to rattle off names because I have no idea what they did or what they're called, but Grandad Roy did. He was an extremely dedicated and meticulous craftsman. He loved spending time in that shed with me, not just creating new pieces, but also persisting with fixing broken items and making for damn sure that they never broke again – liquid nails (plus nails for good measure) are very persuasive in convincing two braces on a leg chair to never have the audacity to break again. I consider myself quite a practical and mechanically-minded person that, along with my dad (Roy's son), are qualities that were inherently handed down by the interaction that I had with Grandad Roy. He was patient with me while I asked questions and also allowed me to get creative in there also – always under instruction. I was never allowed in there without him but of course I snooped while he napped or had his back turned. I can't look at a lathe or drill press without remembering that shed and all of its sights and smells.
Another influence in my life is the art of fermentation. The only tangible link I can form between my winemaking career and my heritage is the house of Nanna Syl and Grandad Roy being filled with fermenting EVERTHING! Nanna and Grandad used to enjoy the fruits (no pun intended) of Nanna's labour whereby bubbling away goodies were spread through the attic at various stages of readiness. The house was always filled with the most amazing smells.

Grandad Roy – you have made a lasting impression on my life and I am grateful for the moments that we shared.

David .. I unknowingly omitted your name in my last message .. I am very sorry to learn of the loss of your Dad (my Uncle) Roy .. He was one of the nicest, and funniest men I've ever met .. He gave us all laughter, and that is the greatest gift you can give .. Lots of love .. your Cousin, Lesley Mellor.

Sylvia and Lynn,
Our memories of Roy are his humour and wit, he always had a fast one.
I remember when we went to Denby to look at that backery, we slept there and and we said they were the coldest beds we had ever slept in.
He was a keen gardner, with his flamethrower he could clear a forty by forty grass lawn in no time at all.
We are forever gratefull for the work he did on our small house in ENGLAND
which increased its value which gave us our start in Canada.

My memories of Uncle Roy are all happy ones. I can see him now, his Army cap at a jaunty angle, always joking ( I still use his phrase (you're getting all muxed ip!)and somehow Brazil nut toffees come to mind too??? I know my dad certainly loved his pal Roy, I can hear him chuckling now _ and, like Keith I used to love the spoon duets he and Uncle Bill did to the music of the band and the social evenings when he took charge of the games we played. Does anyone else remember the Zoo game or the Bus game? How we looked in horror as Uncle Roy, Uncle Bob and I think my dad, performed all kinds of macabre operations on the unsuspecting patient who had bits of trombone and a variety of weird plumbing and junk extracted from his innards in the shadow-play theatre. Treasured memories.I remember too how sad we all felt when the Valentine family left, first for Wales, then even further away and that's how I feel now. I'd love to be close to you all now, just to hug you and share time with you and hear Aunty Sylvia's voice. God bless you all and keep you safe. Lots of love,

I remember one Christmas after eating more than my share stating that I must go on a diet, even though I had probably lost 1000 pounds in my lifetime! Roy, who had eaten more than I, replied that he weighed the same as the day he got demobbed! I always loved the Roy food stories, how much he could eat, in any combination and he enjoyed it all! Mr V.  Thank you for the childhood memories.  Whenever I think of those early years in Cadishead you are always there, the humour, wisdom, and of course the band.

Hi Dad ... well we joked a few times over the years about what you should leave me when you "Pop Off" .... and then we'd have a good laugh and carry on.. well what you left me is a million good memories!! and although as a kid following you around on all those "side jobs" that you did, what I didn't know is you were also showing me how to cut wood and fix a tap and get the lights to come on and I thank you for that dad xxxxx.
and growing up you were always there for us all, I think back and wonder how on just $40 a week did you and mum manage to make three kids feel like we had it all ... and that day we were on holiday at the beach you layed there very still so that the only bee that was out that day stung you and not us ... you took one for the team thanks dad xxx
you gave me all of your "good" driving habits... but now as i look back there were only a couple ... but i will take them .. 
Thanks for everything DAD ... I am going to miss joking with you ... make sure you don't fall off those big white clouds .... and if you do get a chance to send me the lottery numbers (before the draw) that would be the best... say hi to Gran, Saber Dog and Lucky (the cat).

So many find memories of you Roy, from teaching me to swim to listening to your funny stories. You were my personal Danny Kaye, always happy and always had such a positive attitude to life. You will be missed. RIP.    Derek

Roy, you have always been in my thoughts from when you  lived at 649 and got me weight training in the washouse and took all the young band lads to the baths on sun mornings to when you amused all with spoon duets with bill Morris. You will always be remembered for your sense of humour, happy attitude and hard work in whatever you did, in fact with love and gratitude for having known you. God bless you mate, sleep well and RIP. Bless you Sylvia, be strong.

Roy Valentine, My Big brother, very much missed,but never ever forgotten.
 I have some wonderful memory's of you from when we were children living in Ash Avenue, Caddishead, Manchester. U.K, Then as young men in the Army. Then after we both got married, we had our children,once they had all grown up,  you and Sylvia set off on a journey of a live time, living on the other side of the world in Australia, then finally settled in Canada. we have so many photos you sent with little story's on the back of them. So, you will be missed dearly and never ever forgotten.

Uncle Roy.   You were always in my thoughts and still are. You made my childhood so magical,especially at Christmas with the unusual gifts that nobody else had, and also all the stories you told me. Then in my teenage years, when I used to ride my bicycle from Irlam to northwich, would be greeted with open arms and a home made Sunday lunch and cakes made by auntie Sylvia .
In my adult life you were in the U.K visiting family and you came to blackpool to see my first ever house, which you were so proud of for me. You will be so sadly missed but never ever forgotten
