

Elden Richard Underwood, 70, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at his residence in Abilene. Services will be 2:00p.m., Friday, September 20, 2013, at Broadview Baptist Church with Pastor Emeritus David Cason officiating, under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene, Texas, with burial following in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00p.m.Thursday at the funeral home.
Elden was born April 20, 1943 to Alphus (Boss) and Dixie Underwood in Abilene, TX. He began working at the age of 13 at Casey’s Drive-In as a dishwasher/car-hop. He then went to work at American Mud Trucking Co. when he was 16. At 18, he began working for Sears & Roebuck and was there for 37 years, when he “retired” and began his Underwood Sand & Gravel business. He ran his business for eight years and then officially retired. Elden was drafted into the Army in the 1960’s and served our country in both the Army and National Guard. Elden loved restoring old cars and Cushman Motor Scooters.
Elden married his loving wife of 46 years, Dorothy Brubaker on June 2, 1967. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dixie and Boss; son Craig; brothers Alvis, John, Melford, Donald, Clifford J; sisters Dorothy Clements and Cloie Lee Fredeck. He is survived by wife Dorothy Underwood; daughter Gwendolyn Underwood; son Eric Underwood and his wife Cindy; grandsons Evan and Traeh; and sister Naomie Scarborough and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elden loved his friends and family, especially his grandson Evan (his “pride and joy”) and was well loved in return. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Elden’s nieces, Belinda Rhodes, Diana Campbell and Elaine Coffman for all of their help and support.
