

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abilene, with Father Frederick Nawarskas officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM, with a Rosary and time of sharing to begin at 7:00 PM, in the chapel of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US Highway 277 S. in Abilene.
Gilbert was born on May 13, 1963, in Stamford, Texas, the youngest son of Fred Elias Gomez and Isabel (Sanchez) Gomez. At a young age, his family relocated to Abilene where he was raised alongside his two older brothers. He attended Regan, Jefferson, and graduated from Cooper High School in 1981. In his childhood he enjoyed playing sports, something he carried all through life. He would eventually go onto coach his sons little league as well. His love for the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and Golden State Warriors was known by those around him. He also cultivated a strong work ethic as a child starting off with his own paper route. He worked hard up until the very end of his life. Early on he worked for El Chico's. He began a career with the City of Abilene that lasted 23 years, where he worked in several departments. After retirement he also worked at the Abilene Airport and during went full time with Pinkies, a job he enjoyed and had worked at part time for years. He eventually rose to Assistant Manager, and was currently employed with the company at his passing.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He loved eating and listening to music. He will be remembered for always having a good time, being a devoted dad, Pepaw, son, brother and friend. He cherished the many friendships he made through the years. His passing brings to a close a life well lived.
He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Elias Gomez; his son, Joseph "J.J." James Gomez, and a niece, Stormy Kay Gomez.
He is survived by his mother, Isabel Gomez; his children, Vanessa Nicole McQuiston and her husband (Joseph), Jake Ramsey Gomez, Addy Lysette Flores (Jose Vasquez); nine grandchildren, Erick, Isaiah, Rihanna, Nicholas, Liam, Maddix, Lysette, Loui and Leno; great-great grandson, Elias; his brothers, Jimmy and Eddie Gomez; and numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and special friends.
