

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013, at University Church of Christ, 733 E.N. 16th Street, Abilene, with Dr. Brent Isbell officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, across the highway from the funeral home. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 22nd, 2013, at the funeral home.
Irvin was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 25th, 1926 to Daniel Irvin and Josephine Belle Hiler. Following his graduation from Dilley High School in 1942, he enrolled in Abilene Christian College, was a student worker in the print shop until he graduated in 1945 with a BA degree in mathematics. Irvin married Alta Faye Howk on July 11th, 1949 in Searcy, Arkansas. He was in charge of the printing at ACC/ACU for 41 years and printed the Optimist, the Prickly Pear and the ACC Catalogue for about 25 years. Irvin attended the University Church of Christ for over 60 years where he served as deacon and elder.
Irvin was a member of the Abilene Founder Lions Club (formerly the Abilene Downtown Lions Club) since 1965. He served in offices as Tail Twister to President and served as Secretary and Treasurer at various times throughout the many years of being a Lion. In 1974, he was elected as District Governor of Dist 2E-1 and later served as chairman of the Texas Lions Council of Governors. Irvin attended the International Conventions in Dallas, San Francisco, Hawaii, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Canada, Mexico, China and the USA. As a printer, he put together the Growl, a weekly publication for the Lions Club, and printed it for a long period of time. Irvin was involved in the White Cane project, the Bean Suppers, Project Graduation, the Eye Transplant project, the Kidney Foundation, the Crippled Children Camp and many other Lion projects. He also served the community by delivering Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Faye, in 2007. He was also preceded by his parents and brother, Slayden Hiler, all of Dilley, Texas.
Survivors include his sister, Eula B. Farmer of Kerrville; son, Jimmy and wife Ann Hiler of LaPorte; son, Gary and wife Janis Hiler of Abilene; daughter, Anita and husband Rory Cahoon of Niceville, Florida; grandson, J. and wife Jennifer Hiler; grandson, Aaron and wife Hillary Hiler; grandson, Bryan and wife Candace Hiler; grandson, Tommy and wife April Hiler; grandson, Mark and wife Natalie Hiler; seven great-grandchildren: Lynzi, Autumn, Jackson, Emerson, Bryce, Brayden and Hailey; and numerous nieces, nephews and many loving relatives.
