It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Salvatore “Sam” Pupo. Salvatore passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 22, 2024, at Eden House Nursing Home, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, strength, compassion, and generosity. Salvatore was an exceptional husband, father, Nonno and will always be remembered for his big heart, warm presence, and infectious smile.
Salvatore was born on February 16, 1930, in Sierra San Bruno, Italy to his loving parents, Guiseppe and Michelina Pupo – he was one of 10 children. Salvatore left Italy at the age of 25 and landed in Huntsville, Ontario in 1955. Salvatore was a hard-working man, willing to take on any job and make any sacrifices needed to support his family, friends, and loved ones. On April 12th, 1958, he married the love of his life, Ines Pupo (nee Albano). He later relocated to Acton, Ontario, where he worked and continued to grow his family.
Salvatore was a true handyman holding many different types of construction jobs in the electrical, sewage, and gas fields. He spent the majority of his working years at the Acton Tannery (1961 – 1985), and even after his retirement in 1991, he continued to seek work to keep him busy including gardening and lawn maintenance. He also showed up every Saturday to his son’s body shop, or backyard, to help with the upkeep or to chop wood.
Salvatore was one of the first people you called when you needed help fixing a problem. He had a solution for every situation and was able to turn even the most broken things into something wonderful. He purchased a plot of land in Acton and was responsible for building his family’s home. The home he built in Acton is filled with so many joyful and special memories for his children, grandchildren, and loved ones. Salvatore was an amazing gardener, a loyal Montréal Canadiens fan, and the world’s best wine and tomato sauce maker. Salvatore had a love for animals and even spent many years raising and caring for a rescued mourning dove that his grandchildren named Peek-a-Boo. He also rescued a baby pigeon that he named Charlie.
Salvatore was a family-man at heart. He was always there to help his children and family through any of life’s major milestones and was the first person to show up to any of his grandchildren’s sporting events, plays, or dance competitions to cheer them on. He was always so proud of his family and was constantly present to celebrate life’s big wins or support you through challenging times. His generosity and empathy were unmatched – he welcomed anyone into his life and treated them like family. He was devoted to his faith and spent time attending St. Joseph’s Church in Acton.
Salvatore will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure to know him and love him. He is predeceased by his parents, his loving wife, Ines Pupo, and daughter, Michelina Conte, as well as 7 of his siblings. He will be greatly missed by his sisters, his many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy, as well as his son, Joe Pupo (Jane), and son-in-law, Antonio Conte. Salvatore will be remembered forever as the world’s most loving Nonno and Bis-Nonno to his grandchildren, Melissa, Marco (Nicole), Michael, Matthew, Eric, and his sweet great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Callie.
We are all heartbroken by the loss of this great man but find comfort in reflecting on the memories of his life and the important lessons and values he left behind. He will forever be in our hearts.
