Born and raised in Galesburg, IL, Gordon lived a life grounded in faith, guided by Scripture, and defined by service, education, family, and a deep love for learning and the arts. His steady devotion to God’s Word shaped his character, his teaching, and the way he cared for those around him.
Gordon first attended Knox College before leaving his studies to await the draft during the Korean War. Upon receiving his draft notice for the U.S. Army, he instead enlisted in the United States Air Force, committing to four years of service. From 1953 to 1957, he served honorably in the 6910th Radio Group Mobile stationed in Germany, an experience that broadened his worldview and sparked a lifelong love of travel and exploration; later serving in the US Navy Reserve.
After completing his military service, Gordon returned to his academic pursuits. He enrolled at Illinois State University, earning his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he received his Master’s degree in English Literature.
Gordon went on to dedicate 33 years to teaching at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. He inspired generations of students with his passion for literature, language, and thoughtful inquiry. Teaching was not merely his profession but his calling, and he approached it with patience, conviction, and intellectual curiosity.
Beyond the classroom, Gordon embraced life with warmth and humor. He had a quick wit, a bit of sass and a gentle sense of humor that endeared him to family, friends, and students alike. He loved to travel, always eager to experience new places and cultures. A devoted patron of the arts, he enjoyed opera, orchestral performances, and choral music. He played the cello and piano and loved to sing, filling his home with music over the years. He also delighted in life’s simple pleasures — especially desserts and a good bowl of popcorn shared with family.
He was a devoted father and grandfather. Gordon is survived by his children: Derek Long (Alex), Alaina Dahlin (Robert), Astasia Moon (Chris), and Brennan Long (Nikki); and by his cherished grandchildren: Brandon and Colman Long; Roger and Sarah Dahlin; Olivia and Alexander Patel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Ethel Long, and his sisters, Joan, Joyce, and Carolyn.
Gordon was married to Delores Podhorn and later to Juanita Rafield. Above all, he will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his devotion to Scripture, his love of family, and the joyful spirit with which he lived each day. His legacy lives on in the lives of his children and grandchildren, in the countless students he mentored, and in all who were blessed by his wisdom, humor, and steadfast love.
Calling hours will be held at Rose Hill Funeral Home, located at 3653 W Market St, Akron, OH 44333, on February 28, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at the same location from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm with a meal afterwards.
