Born in Cleveland on January 9, 1948, he led an extraordinary life of service. Graduating from Holy Name High School, he went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force on active duty during the war with Vietnam. He was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart for wounds endured in combat.
In 1976 after his years in the service Joseph graduated from Cleveland State University with a bachelor's degree in political science. After school, he served with the United States Treasury Department for more than thirty years before retiring in 2008.
His love of sports memorabilia and collection of cards was fueled by his passion for The Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. From childhood, his fondness for squirrels continued throughout his entire life. Joseph was dedicated to helping all veterans in need. He was treasurer of the MOPH military order of the Purple Heart, Summit County, Chapter 699.
He is survived by his two daughters, Richelle and Laura (Joseph Piastrelli), and his younger brother, John. He was preceded by his parents Wilfred & Sallie Zakzewski.
A Memorial Visitation to honor his life will take place on Sunday, July 18th from 2 – 4 PM at the Rose Hill Funeral Home 3653 W Market St., Akron, OH 44333.
