Douglas Lorne Smith “Doug” age 74 of Marshall passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. Doug was born November 29, 1946 in Marshall, MI the son of Bernard and Iretha (Fountain) Smith who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a beloved nephew, Todd Smith.
Doug was a graduate of Marshall High School, class of 1965. On November 29, 1968, Doug was united in Marriage to Judith (Grable) in Marshall, MI. Doug served our country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. He and his wife were the owners of the Western Auto Store in downtown Marshall and part-owners of Myers Food Center. When the food center closed, Doug became employed with Darling Hardware, but because of his hard work ethic and his local connections, he was recruited to work for Lumbertown. Doug worked well into retirement until he became ill in 2016. Doug loved people and seemed to know everyone in the small town where he was born and raised.
Doug stayed busy by serving in the community as well. He was known to volunteer for many years at the Fairgrounds, driving the tram for people. He was a past member of the Jaycees, member of the Lions Club and a member of the Moose Lodge in Marshall. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias which held their meetings above his Western Auto store.
Doug loved family gatherings and was always first in line at the potluck. He was always good for second helpings and tried to make sure that no good food went to waste, but instead went to his waist. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and mowing his lawn. He and Judy danced together for many years. You could always find him on the dance floor at any wedding, square dance event or whenever the music was hitting just right. He enjoyed traveling to North Carolina to visit his daughter and take family vacations on the Chain of Lakes in Coldwater. He traveled on many mission trips with the United Methodist Church as well. Doug, Judy and their daughter Elizabeth spent many summers as seasonal campers at Tri-Lakes Campground and eventually remodeled a cottage right next to the campgrounds on Lyon Lake.
In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, Judy, Doug is also survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Steele of Marshall, two grandchildren, Watson and Agnes, brother, Marvin (Linda) Smith, sister Denise (Dan) Crumrine and several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 with visitation at 11AM, service at 12AM and luncheon to follow. Pastor Erin Fitzgerald will be officiating these services at Marshall United Methodist Church, 721 US Hwy 27 N, Marshall, MI.
In honor of Doug, memorial contributions may be made to Oaklawn Hospice, The Marshall United Methodist Church, The Lions Club, The Moose Lodge or to a charity of the Donor’s choice.
The family is being served by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion.
