

Russell H. Spanninga (84), of Springport, MI passed away on May 11, 2026 at Henry Ford Hospice Home, Jackson after a four year battle with cancer. He was born March 22, 1942 in Allegan, MI the son of Russell and Marie (Bekkering) Spanninga.
He graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, MI, attended Kellogg Community College and Michigan State University, earning four degrees, a Bachelors, two Masters in Education and Specialist in Administration. While teaching for 30 years at Albion High School, he coached Track and Cross-County, taught Driver’s Education, taught over 30 years of night school and served as President of the Twin Valley Principal Association for several years.
Russell worked in various factories in his early years and was also an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed golfing, boating, traveling, bowling, tennis, photography, water-skiing and, most of all, was an avid reader.
He was preceded in death by both his parents and his younger brother, Jeff Spanninga.
Russ is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol of Springport, daughters, Sarah and Anne of Ann Arbor, son, RJ Spanninga of TX, two grandchildren, Skylar and Ronin Spanninga of TX, sister, Sandra Hildenbrand of Battle Creek, two brothers, Don Spanninga of CA, Gary (Jane) Bekkering of TN, nephews, Chris (Caroline) Spanninga, Paul Spanninga, Eric (Christy) Ware, Brian Ware and many cousins and extended family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 with visitation beginning at 1pm until the time of service at 2pm at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion, MI with Rev. Louis Collazo officiating. Burial will follow in Clarence Center Cemetery.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to a charity of one’s choice in Russell’s name.
