Passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on Feb 6, 2022 at the age of 86 in Abbottsford, BC. Predeceased by her sisters Florence and Dorothy, first husband William Barrie (1955-2002), second husband John Mills (2009-2020). Devoted, loving and cherished mother to Donna Stockstill and William “Don” Barrie, beloved grandmother to Jacklyn, Shannon, William “Richard” and Michael, beloved great-grandmother to Linkoln, Charlotte, Luman and Kai. She is also survived by siblings Thomas (Florence), Edwin “Ted” (Monique), Audrey, Joyce “Susie” and Judy (Ted) and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was raised in Quebec, married William and had their two children. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, canoeing, camping and fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, corn roasts, dancing, playing cards and building their first home. She left her children with many memories of a very happy childhood and fun with all the relatives and family friends there.
In 1969 the family moved to BC where she worked for BC Rail for decades and was a lifetime member of BCRail Pioneers and had also been a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She continued to enjoy time spent camping, fishing, wine making, other activities and contact with family and friends in Quebec and BC. She met Barry and Diane in the 1970’s and they remained dear close friends to the end of her life in BC.
In 2002 they sold their home, then bought and moved into a complex shortly before the loss of her first husband. She lived the rest of her life there making more friends she cherished and many acquaintances over the years. She enjoyed the events that took place in the hall on site.
In her 70’s she was lucky enough to meet John and he became the second love of her life. They married in 2009 and spent some of their favorite times together dancing, traveling and visiting family and friends until his passing in 2020.
The last few years of her life were not easy with the loss of John, the pandemic, living a distance from her children, and recent health issues, but she considered herself very fortunate to have had a good family, good friends and a happy life. She also left her family feeling so grateful for all the caring, happiness and wonderful memories she gave us all and very fortunate to have had her for our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great sense of humour and the sound of her laughter remains. She will be greatly missed by many.
The family appreciates and thanks her friends, neighbours, Dr. Gary Heffner, doctors and staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Heart Function Clinic, Royal Columbian Hospital & Cardiac Clinic, Fraser Health Home Care (special thanks to Kaitlyn & Imelda), and all others for their care and support. As per her wishes, there will not be a service. A private family gathering will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
