Joy Virginia Holst (97) passed away peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
Joy was born in the small village of Young, Saskatchewan in 1929. At the age of twelve she and her older sister Margaret moved to Victoria, BC. Her first job was working in the Tea Room at the Empress Hotel.
Throughout her working years she had a variety of jobs but was proudest of her career as a hairdresser. She graduated from Vancouver School of Hairdressing then moved to Prince George where clients referred to her as “the best hairdresser to hit the north.”
She was athletic. As a softball player, she had a clever way of stealing bases, and people praised her skillful pitching; striking people out.
Joy’s love of music and natural ability to harmonize lead her to many concerts. She enjoyed quoting, Englebert Humperdink “I’m just having fun” and Frank Sinatra “I did it my way”.
She had a variety of hobbies; knitting, crocheting, sewing, and she enjoyed playing cards.
Family and friends will remember her quick wit, her ability to make them laugh and her independent nature.
Joy was predeceased by her daughter Denice, in 2023.
She is survived by her daughter Jerine, granddaughter Alannah/Jon, Great Grandchildren Holden, Gus, Karis & Mac, Daughter Gail (Bill) Grandson Derek (Brianda)
We will remember the good times, her giving nature, the ways she encouraged and how simple comments like “be happy to come and be happy to go” shaped how we look at life. With that one comment, her granddaughter finds it easier going from country to country serving as a missionary’s wife.
She will be greatly missed and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May she rest in peace!
