Laurence St. Pierre

Laurence was born in a small town in rural Alberta. At a young age he and his family moved to Maillardville. After being told by a doctor that he shouldn’t do sports because of “heart issues” he took up running and went on to win a provincial championship. In high school Laurence met the love of his life, Joan, they married at the young ages of 18 and 19 in Whalley BC. Laurence worked in retail management which caused them to move around several times before settling in Agassiz, BC in 1970 and opening the L&J Department store. Eventually Laurence went into Real Estate, then purchased the Real Estate and Insurance business with his business partner. He set his sights on becoming a Notary Public and while working full time he would drive into UBC a couple of nights a week to attend classes. He spent countless late nights burning the midnight oil studying and completing assignments. He completed the courses in the top of his class and when the long time notary in Agassiz retired he took over and continued in the profession until his retirement. He loved to tell people he was sleeping with his secretary because he truly was as his wife Joan was his legal secretary. He was the boss from 9-5 and she was the boss from 5-9 he would say.

Laurence had many hobbies. He held his private pilots license, scuba diving license (his family loved the fresh crab and cod dinners!), water skiing, downhill skiing, floor hockey, ice hockey and of course moto-x racing! In the mid 1970’s Laurence and a friend submitted a proposal to open a dirt bike track, it was accepted and after many, many hours of labour the Agassiz Moto-x track opened and remains operational to this day! Laurence also rode an Oldtimers International moto-x circuit where he earned many 1st place titles. At one point when his first grandson started riding they were the only “grandfather/grandson” racing team in Canadian sanctioned events.

Throughout his life - work, hobbies, his wife Joan was always by side, they built houses and created homes. They raised 2 daughters Tracy and Kim, spoiled 3 grandchildren Preston (Lucy), Danielle (Dylan), and Justin (Dani) and they were also blessed with 2 great grandchildren Carter and Josie. In July of this year he celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary with Joan, a milestone not achieved by many. It wasn’t easy but somehow they made it look that way.

The family is taking some time to come to terms with his passing and will hold a celebration of his life at a later date.
