Nora Haberlin passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025 in Mission, BC, just 2 days shy of her 101 st birthday. Nora was born an only child on a farm near Theodore, SK on February 13, 1924. Nora excelled at Chemistry in school and had dreams of becoming a Pharmacist. However, during WWII, she ran a Service Club organizing dances for the Servicemen in training all over Saskatchewan. It was there, she met her first husband, Arnold Scott, and they decided to move to Vancouver, BC, settle down and raise 7 children over a span of 32 years.
Through the years, in their Vancouver neighbourhood of Marpole and beyond, she opened several retail stores; a variety store, and women’s and children’s clothing stores, retiring at the age of 65.
At the age of 52, Nora married her second husband, Loyd Haberlin, who also lived in Marpole and raised 4 children with his first wife. Loyd and Nora boarded many students over the years from UBC, Japan, South Korea, England, New Zealand, and Australia. A few of these students have kept in touch with Loyd and Nora all through the years with cards, letters, and gifts which were greatly appreciated.
In her retirement years, Nora loved to travel, and went on several trips and cruises with her husband Loyd. Hawaii was her favourite place and they travelled there several times. She also loved to dance and did so every chance she got. She was interested in Astronomy and space exploration and was a whiz at card games. Most of all, she loved her family, and never missed an opportunity to celebrate with a family gathering and feast.
As Nora aged and was no longer able to care for herself, her daughter, Judy, graciously offered to move Nora into her home in Mission and cared for her there for 4 years until she was placed in Hospice. Nora and her family are grateful for Judy’s unwavering care.
She is predeceased by her first husband Arnold and her second husband Loyd, as well as her step-daughter Carol. She will be missed by her surviving children Diane (John), Murray (Lorraine), Valerie, Judy (Vince), Gary (Anita), Heather (Wade), Cindy (Andrew), her step-children Lorraine, Larry, and Colleen, and her many loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as distant cousins Janet, Wendy, Marion, Ian, Gordon, and Hazel.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, care aides, social workers, and volunteers of Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC who provided end-of-life care during her last 13 days.
