Dick was born October 8, 1921 in Brooksby, Saskatchewan. He worked on the family farm with his parents Arthur and Winnifred and his six siblings (Alice, Henry, Emma, Catherine (Lucy), Syd and Frank) until joining the RCAF in 1942. His Halifax bomber was shot down over Germany in 1945 and he spent time in POW camps until the end of the war.
In 1947 he married Jean Taylor of Ridgedale, Saskatchewan and they raised their three children on a farm near Brookby.
In November, 1958 the family moved to Surrey, BC where Dick and Jean co-owned and managed a motel known as Aldon Bungalows on the Fraser Highway. Retiring from the hospitality business in 1975, they moved to a small acreage in Langley, BC. Jean passed away in 2004 but Dick continued to live on the acreage, teaching himself to cook meals, bake cookies and desserts (his apple pies were the best for miles around!), can peaches and pears, make crabapple jelly and, with the help of son Brian, take care of the property.
Dick was a member of the Cloverdale Legion and a Life Member of the Langley Curling Club. He was curling with the club when he was 99, stopping only when Covid prevented it.
Dick is survived by three children Alan (Janet), Catherine (Wess), and Brian, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 14, 2025 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 20955 Old Yale Rd., Langley.
