Rommel is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Leona; his daughter, Romy; his grandchildren, Catrina, Kiara, Konner, Emma and Savannah; his great-grandchildren, Carter, Hunter, Rhys, Jackson, and Ella; and his siblings, Dorothy, Ellen, Dave, Eunice, Ivy, James, Leonora, and Theresa. He is also remembered lovingly by his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The Loof family left Swaziland and spent a brief period in Brake, Germany, while awaiting immigration to Canada. During that time, Rommel worked on fishing boats, a job he greatly enjoyed and shaped his future work ethic. Shortly thereafter, the family settled in Victoria, British Columbia, where Rommel began what would become a long, successful, and respected career in the construction industry.
Rommel met Leona in 1977, and their friendship quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership. They were married in 1982 and later moved to the Lower Mainland, where they built a life together filled with family, hard work, and adventure. Rommel began the second part of his successful construction career on the mainland, until his retirement in 2019. Throughout his career, he was site superintendent for many significant projects that continue to contribute to the skylines of both Victoria and Vancouver.
Rommel took great pride in his work and was known as a strong, hardworking, and stoic man. Together, he and Leona created a life they loved on their hobby farm, where they raised horses, cattle, Border Collies, and occasionally chickens. Their home was always open to family and friends, and many cherished memories were made through pig roasts, Halloween parties, Easter egg hunts, and countless gatherings filled with laughter and love. After selling the farm and moving to Murrayville, Rommel and Leona found another piece of paradise in Birch Bay. There, they enjoyed sharing good food, good wine, and good company with the many wonderful friends they met along the way, while continuing to make
lasting memories with their family. Their grandchildren loved the beach, pool and hot tub.
Rommel also loved travelling, taking cruises, exploring America in their motorhome, keeping up with the daily 6 o’clock news, and spending time with the people he loved most.
Faith was an important part of Rommel's life. Before every meal, he would gather the family and say grace, thanking the Lord for the food before them, for family, and for the guidance along the way.
Rommel passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Langley Hospice, following a brief battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
