Lorie Mary Roberts, 86, of Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully in her beloved home on Monday, March 30, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. Lorie was born on June 28, 1933 in Castle Hill, ME, the third of nine children of Henry and Rose Madore. She grew up near Haystack Mountain and later moved to Presque Isle where she graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1951. In 1956 she met the love of her life, William H. Roberts, at the Loring AFB Officers Club. After a six week whirlwind romance, they were married on April 14, 1956, starting a 48 year marriage that lasted until Bill’s passing in 2004. Lorie was an exemplary military wife who accompanied and supported her husband through twelve assignments in 23 years. This included two of her favorite assignments abroad to Turkey and Spain. Throughout the complexities and chaos of the moves Lorie always managed to make it look easy through her amazing organizational skills. She devoted her life to the support of her husband and to raising their four children; Jancy, Sharon, Jennifer (JJ) and Brian. She made a loving home a priority for her family.
After her children were grown, Lorie returned to work holding many prestigious positions. She was a bank teller, administrative assistant for the DoD and the receptionist for the US Attorney’s Office in Alexandria, VA. Her final and most cherished position was as the Executive Assistant to the Honorable Judge Claude M. Hilton, Chief Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia. She retired in 2003 after a distinguished 18 year career with the Judge. She was renowned for her professionalism at both the US Attorney’s Office and the Albert Bryan Courthouse but more importantly for the way she treated everyone she met. She formed deep and lifelong relationships that her children still hear about today. She had an incredible impact on the offices where she worked and she is still remembered and highly-regarded in the Alexandria legal community.
Lorie was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, sisters Nancy Wright and Irene Madore, and son-in-law Tony Williamson. She is survived by her four children; daughter-in-law Allison Roberts; son-in-law Gerd Henssen; five grandchildren: Lindsey (Brian) Hulse, Laura (Ali) Asaad, Evan Roberts, Sean Roberts, and Ashley Roberts; five great grandchildren: Aiden, Logan, Haley, Ethan, and Jacob. She is also survived by David Hatton Roberts, who was a son to her; Dan Daddario, a special friend of the family; five sisters; one brother and numerous other relatives.
In addition to raising her children, Lorie was a devout Catholic who enjoyed attending Mass, reading her devotionals and listening to gospel music. She loved entertaining, spending time with family and friends, telling old stories, laughing, loving, and relishing life. She particularly enjoyed her annual vacations in Hilton Head with the entire family, and Hawaii getaways with “her Billy”. She was a compassionate and caring woman, with great empathy for her fellow man, particularly those who were in need. She touched the lives of many with her generosity, kind heart, sound advice and willingness to listen.
