Catherine P. Clagett

Catherine Prohira Clagett, 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Alexandria, Virginia, on Sunday, December 7, surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous struggle with autoimmune disease.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Charles and Mary Joan (Velosky) Prohira. Catherine graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Social Science, where she met her husband, David. They went on to share 54 years of life together.

Catherine was a devoted mother and grandmother, a dedicated Army wife, and a spirited champion of benevolent causes. Supporting her husband’s military career, she faithfully accompanied him on eighteen assignments across the United States and overseas.

Throughout her life, she devoted herself to civic leadership, serving in many roles, including President of the Fort Bragg Wives Club in North Carolina, and two terms as President of the Heidelberg German-American Wives Club in Germany. Over more than 31 years, she supported wounded warriors, veterans, spouses of deployed service members, children with disabilities, and numerous charities. In recognition of her many contributions, she received numerous letters of appreciation and was awarded both the Commander’s Award for Public Service Medal and the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal.

Catherine is survived by her husband, David; their two sons, David III and John, and their wives, Jennifer and Charlotte; and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth (Mark) Caliano of Los Angeles, and Charlotte (Jimmy) Jones and Margie (Dave) Bowman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed for her unwavering love of family, her generous spirit, and her lifelong devotion to serving others.

A memorial service is planned at Christ Church, Alexandria, VA., at 2PM, January 17, 2026. Catherine’s interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, at a later date.
