Thank-you for providing some photos of Dave when he was younger. That was when I both knew him and counted him as a friend. I guess we all change physically over the years and can become unrecognizable to old friends, but I am truly saddened to have read of Dave's passing.

He and I entered American University in the fall of 1963. We were both from the Midwest, and we formed a loose friendship almost immediately. Our lives at AU both intersected and diverged. We were both active in student government, and in Alpha Phi Omega. After our first two years, our paths diverged. He continued, as did I, in student government,. He eventually was president of our class; I was chairman of the Student Union Board. I left APO, as did he, but he also became involved in the Greek system. In all, however, he was a major force on campus, and he was respected by just about everyone. No, I would more accurately say, everyone!

In an age when people routinely question others' motives, it is hard to remember when people who put themselves out to serve were actually and accurately perceived to be good people, willing to devote themselves to the common good. 

In that spirit, Dave was my friend, and, I believe, we had a strong mutual respect until we left AU in 1967 and our paths took divergent paths.

I was totally taken aback when I heard that he had died. I was, in fact, looking forward to seeing him again next year when we would celebrate our 50th reunion at AU.

All I can say right now, is you should be very proud of Dave. I am proud to have been numbered among his friends at AU more than fifty years ago. That I (and I am sure many of his fraternity brothers and fellow AU students) remember him so vividly and fondly after these many years of separation, is a tribute to him. That his name is on several AU awards panels on campus should tell you what a wonderful person and friend he was to us and to his college community. There is nothing that I have read to indicate that he did not continue to be a wonderful man, spouse, father, and grandfather to his family and to his friends as he lived his life.

Thank-you for posting recent photos along with the early ones. I join you in mourning what we all have lost, and I wish only the best for all his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I grieve with you. 

He was a wonderful friend and a wonderful human being. God bless him and his family.

PS When I first came to this site, I wasn't sure that this was the Dave Dougherty I knew. When I saw the photo of him with his baby daughter, I knew, and I cried. You will miss him, as will I (even though I have not seen him in almost fifty years).

I am saddened to hear of David's passing. He was one of the kindest and most thoughtful souls I've ever known, and always had a supportive word to share with others. I greatly admired him and am thankful to have known him. Please accept my condolences.

Dave was a classmate and a fellow Boy Scout in Aurora, IN. He was the best. He had a major influence on many of us. He will be missed. So sorry for your loss.

Dear Liz, Josh and baby Claire,

We are so saddened by David's death.  Although we only met him one time, at your wedding, we are so blessed to have had that opportunity, as he was a kind and gentle man.  We are blessed to have Liz and Claire join the Dougherty family to ours.  We will pray for David's soul in heaven and hope that the love we will share with his daughter and granddaughter in years to come will provide some comfort.
