

Harold Reed Denton, known to many as “Hal,” was born in Dearborn, Michigan, to Edith and Frederick Denton. He was the beloved brother of Shirley Ann Toepler-Olzimmer and lived a full and vibrant life marked by service, passion, and dedication.
Hal graduated from the University of Michigan in 1966, following a tour of sea duty as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He went on to build a distinguished career in business, serving as President and CEO of General Land Abstract Company in New Jersey.
Hal shared 59 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Barbara Wendy Denton, whom he married on March 19, 1966. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, a shared love of horses, and a passion for restoring historic homes.
An accomplished sportsman, Hal served as Joint Master of Foxhounds at Amwell Valley Hounds. He was also an avid sailboat racer and a dedicated competitor in croquet tournaments worldwide. He began his croquet career in 2009 with the West River Wickets Croquet Club, joining the United States Croquet Association in 2011 and the National Croquet Club in 2012. In 2020, he was elected to the Management Committee of the World Croquet Federation and was nominated for the WCF Hall of Fame in 2022. A true ambassador for the sport, Hal worked tirelessly to grow and support membership at the clubs he cherished.
Deeply committed to volunteerism and philanthropy, Hal contributed his time and leadership to organizations including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. He also served his community through nearly a decade of volunteer work with the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services.
Hal will be remembered for his energy, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the people and causes he loved.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Rocky,” he leaves behind a loving family and many dear friends, including his wife, Wendy; his two sons, Reed and Taft; his grandchildren, James, Alexander, and Ella; his sister, Shirley; his brother-in-law, Jerry; and many extended family members.
A service will be held on May 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 105 North Camp Meade Road, Linthicum Heights, Maryland. Burial and Mercy Meal to follow at the Sacred Monastery of Saint Sidonia, 13830 Saint Benedict Way, Union Bridge MD 21791.
