

Joan Mathieu Willis, 83, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on February 15, 2022. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana as the third child of Enuf and Mabel Mathieu, and was sister to Carmel, Charles and Enuf Mathieu, Jr. Joan graduated from Xavier Prep High School at the age of 16 and went on to graduate from Xavier University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Education. Despite retiring in 2004, Joan continued her career as a substitute teacher until the time of her death. She was a devoted educator and mentor, not only to her students but also to her grandchildren.
In 1961 Joan married Raymond Willis and had three wonderful children. As a military family, they lived in numerous places around the world and settled in Northern Virginia where they were residents for over 36 years.
Joan was actively involved in social activities, was an avid walker and health fanatic, and completed several marathons. She was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Joan was known for her witty personality and left an imprint on the lives of everyone she met. She is survived by her three children Stephen Willis (Audrey), Denise Levenberry, and Joy Carter (Jerry), grandchildren: Brandon Carter, Nathaniel Causley, III, Stephen Benet Willis, Jr., Eric Levenberry, Jr., Dasia and Lena Willis, Jerry Carter, Jr., Elise and Danielle Levenberry, great-grandchild Hayden Willis, beloved nieces and nephews and a host of Mathieu and Gourrier cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 28th at 11:00, Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
