Maryanne Thomas, 76, of Fairfax Station, VA passed away on April 10, 2024 after a battle with heart disease.
Maryanne was born on June 16, 1947 to John Willie Freeman and Annie Ruth Stone Freeman in Wrens, Georgia. After graduating from Jefferson County High School, Maryanne went on to study Sociology at Albany State University graduating in 1970.
After completing her undergraduate studies, Maryanne began working in the DC government, beginning a career of government service that eventually spanned 43 years and included work at agencies like NASA and the U.S. Department of State. Over the course of her career, Maryanne was known as a trailblazer. She mentored many people and was known to be a good listener and counselor to others who sought her advice on work and life challenges.
Maryanne loved to learn about people and the world around her. When possible, she tried to help others in need. She was also a deeply spiritual person and studied regularly with a church group stopping short of becoming a minister when she had children. She enjoyed an active social life and valued having a good time with her friends.
After retiring in 2014, Maryanne spent her time talking to friends, discussing politics, and reconnecting with her sorority.
Maryanne was predeceased by siblings, Willie Ruth Freeman Weston and John Willie “Twillie” Freeman, Jr. Maryanne is survived by her children, Tyrone Thomas and Ashley Thomas, siblings, Barbara Atkins, Calvin Freeman, Angela Freeman, and her mother, Annie Ruth Stone Freeman.

Saturday, April 27, 2024- 11 am- Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314
○ Celebration of Life Service begins at 11 am
○ Reception follows at 12:15 pm
