A master mechanic, he was widely recognized for his expertise as a collector, restorer and judge of antique American automobiles, and for his willingness to share his knowledge and experience with those who shared his passion.
For decades he and his wife Marilyn showed and toured across the country with dozens of their cars, from Oldsmobiles and Fords to Reos and Kaisers, building a nationwide circle of friends.
Born in Dorena, Ky., he grew up in Kentucky and Illinois before moving to Detroit. He served proudly in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division.
He moved to Central Florida in 1968 and six years later established Gene’s Auto Repair.
Pursuing a lifelong passion, he began collecting and restoring American automobiles in the 1970s, beginning with the first of what would be several 1950 Oldsmobiles. In 1982 he joined the Antique Automobile Club of America, later serving as president of the club’s local branch and for many years was a participant and judge at AACA shows around the country. For 15 years he served on the club’s National Awards judging team, and in 1999, 2000 and 2005 he judged at every national meet.
He was a 2012 recipient of the Lee Iacocca Award, given in recognition of dedication to excellence in preserving an American automotive tradition.
He was a member of the National Antique Oldsmobile Club, Kaiser-Frazer Owners Club, Vintage Motor Club, Early V-8 Ford Club, Buick Club of America, Retractable Club of America, the REO Club and the Model T Club.
Although a stroke two years before his death left him unable to drive or tour, he took great joy in the time he was able to spend with his family, especially his six great-grandchildren ages 3 years to 4 months.
Predeceased by his eldest son David, he is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughter Pam Lallathin; son Roger; grandchildren Timothy James (T.J.) Lallathin Jr. (Amber), Amanda Bashinski (Spencer), Tiffany Lallathin, Eleanor Roy and David Roy; greatgrandchildren Brayden, Sawyer, Carter, Levi, Ellie and Ruby.
