He was born on July 6, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Henry & Elizabeth (Weir) Mahnken.
Lou met his dear love, Flora, at the Arthur Murray ballroom dancing studio where they were both students, and she rhumba’d her way right into his heart. Both Lou and Flora were also involved in a pool league where they won the district tournament. Unfortunately, the regional tournament for their pool league was the same day as their wedding. Lou and Flora had to choose between the regional tournament and getting married. Of course, they chose to be married to one another on May 23, 1987.
Lou served his country with an honorable discharge From the United States Army, excelled as a Sales Manager in the paint industry by trade and was respected and beloved by his peers. But, everyone who knows him well, knows his life’s work was creating Joy. Lou (Dad) (Grandpa) (Uncle) always had a plan for a laugh…a gimmick with a lizard… a special phrase to turn a trip to the grocery store into a rocket launch. His family members still giggle quickly at the memories of their days with Lou. They remember him thoroughly enjoying golf, gardening in his “yard”, traveling the world with his bride, playing Texas hold em’, dancing, playing billiards, boating, playing on the beach, fishing, entertaining, grilling BBQ, camping, boy scouts…these memories will overflow their hearts forever.
Lou is survived by his wife, Flora Mahnken; his daughters, Joan Mahnken Faulkner (Mark) and Anne Mahnken Carr; his son, Louis Henry Mahnken, Jr.; his sisters, Virginia Mahnken, Patricia Woodward (Woody), Bettie Garibotto, Linda Tortoricci (Frank); his brother, Denis Mahnken; his grandchildren, Nick Burkhart (Ashley), Madison Faulkner, Natalie Faulkner, Katelyn Coppedge, Caroline Carr and many other family and friends to cherish his memory. Lou was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Mahnken and Elizabeth Weir; his brothers, John Mahnken, Fred Mahnken, Richard (Ritchie) Mahnken, William (Billy) Mahnken, and one sister, Doreen (Dee) Mahnken.
