She attended school in Bowie, Texas, and lived in the small community of Sunset, graduating in 1948. That same summer, on July 6, she married the love of her life, James. As a young World War II spouse, Doris embraced the challenges and joys of military life. While stationed in New Orleans, they welcomed their first child, Terry. When James was deployed overseas, Doris returned to Sunset until his service ended, and together they eventually settled in Amarillo, where they built their home and raised their growing family. They lived more than ten years in the house that became the heart of so many cherished memories. Doris later welcomed Ricky Don in 1953 and Darlenne in 1957.
A longtime member and faithful attender of Temple Baptist Church in Amarillo, Doris lived out her faith with sincerity and joy. She led others to Christ, including many dear friends from her senior citizens line dancing group—a hobby she loved and shared with contagious enthusiasm. She also found delight in sewing, exploring garage sales, and embracing the simple pleasures of life.
Above all, Doris was devoted to her family.
She was a beloved daughter, a steadfast wife, a loving mother of three, a proud grandmother of six, and a joyful great-grandmother of eight. Her life was marked by kindness, creativity, laughter, and a gentle strength that inspired everyone who knew her.
Her final words, spoken with the same love she carried throughout her life, were:
“Love ya, love ya, love ya”
Her legacy lives on in all who were blessed to be part of her story.
