Heaven gained a new angel when Doris Ellen Joens Larson, 88 of Amarillo, was called Home on July 1, 2016. Doris was born April 1, 1928 in Davenport, Iowa to August and Dorathea Joens. She graduated high school in 1946 and then graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1950 with a degree in Musical Education. She taught one year in Garrison, Iowa and attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Doris moved to Amarillo to attend West Texas State University (WTAMU) where she earned her Master's Degree. She met Richard Larson whom she married in 1953 and later divorced in 1974. She was an accomplished musician who played the flute, saxophone, piano, violin and cello. She played the french horn in the Amarillo Symphony for 25 years.
Doris retired from Furr’s Cafeteria after 21 years. Two years later, she decided she was not ready for retirement. She went to work for Wal-Mart for 11 years and retired again. She enjoyed volunteering for Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for many years. Some of her hobbies included crossword and jigsaw puzzles, crocheting and camping at the lake with her family. She loved everyone and was always ready to give you some of her wonderful hugs-- you rarely received just one. She never met a stranger and was quick to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. Doris’ family was very dear to her and she greatly enjoyed spending time with all of them.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two grandsons.
Doris is survived by one brother, Raymond Joens of Le Claire, Iowa and her eight children: Catherine Varga and husband Frank; Janet Blackburn and husband John; William Larson and wife Kathy; Virginia Hill; James Larson and wife Goldie; Marjorie Bourque and husband Ricky; Robert Larson and wife Elizabeth; and Michael Larson and wife Dawn, all of Amarillo.
