

Gene Scott, Amarillo Real Estate Broker and land developer, changed residence to his Heavenly home on Friday, August 25, 2015. Gene was born to his parents, Walter E. and Sara Hodges Scott. With the encompassing Depression and drought in 1929, the Scott’s moved to Stinnett. A strong work ethic instilled in him at a young age, and Gene being the only son, he was responsible for milking the cows before dawn, feeding the animals, gathering eggs, and etc., catching the school bus with five sisters; followed by milking the cows again before sundown. The milk sold then to neighboring workers, many building the local Carbon Black camp. Gene exhibited a passion for athletics in school, lettering in football, baseball, and boxing! After graduating from Stinnett High School, Gene joined the U.S. Navy, cruising the Atlantic in 1946. Being blessed with intelligence, personality, strength, good looks, and amazing ability to dance, he won first place in the ship’s jitterbug and other dance contests in the 1940’s. Upon discharge from the Navy, he moved to Pampa and was promoted to Office Manager for SWPS Co. representing Pampa and surrounding towns. As Treasurer of Pampa Jaycees, he then accepted a position as Stinnett City Manager and Tax Assessor-Collector and returned to his hometown. Gene held many prominent positions aside from his professional career. As an appointed member of the Stinnett School Board, President of Stinnett’s Ex-Student Association in 1957, charter President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce through 1961. Gene also formed a local Jaycee’s Club and was awarded first place in the State of Texas for community development projects. Gene became licensed as a Texas Real Estate agent, specializing in acquiring, platting, and selling acreage in the Panhandle. In 1961, Gene opened Scott ad Co. Real Estate, joined Amarillo Board of Realtors, and was appointed into the Potter Co. Industrial Development Board, becoming Project Manager for the development of Western Plaza Shopping Center. While developing commercial properties encompassing portions of several Amarillo additions, including Scotsman, Olsen Park, and areas at and around Bell and Plains Blvd. Gene became a successful land developer and Real Estate Broker with a vast cumulative knowledge of West Texas Agricultural Real Estate. A man with a positive attitude, tenacious spirit, winning smile and unbridled ambition and vision, Gene played an important and lasting role as a leader and visionary developer to Amarillo as it grew, contributing to his integral and honest relationships with many businesses and community friends. In his spare time, Gene Scott was a true Texas Cowboy, enjoying riding on his ranch, roping, raising cattle and farming. A generous, and charitable Christian man, he contributed to many worthy Christian and political causes. It was an honor to have been in the life of a man who was loved and respected by many. He will be deeply missed.
Gene was preceded in death by his daughter Danna Scott Fields, his sisters Doolie Snow, Dovie Barrett, Billie Barrett, Audrey Taylor.
Gene is survived by his devoted, loving wife Connie; his daughters, Debbie Rizk, Trena Keith and husband John, Rosalee Guerrero and husband Alex, all of Amarillo; sons, Johnny Garcia and wife Sherrie of Dallas and Larry Garcia of Amarillo as well as 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; also survived by a sister, Mary A. Smith, many nephews and nieces, and many special friends.
