Lindy Gene Rollins

Lindy Gene Rollins had run the race and fought the good fight for 93 years. His earthly toils came to an end on January 5, 2022 when COVID-19 ended his earthly life and ushered him into the eternal presence of God. There to meet him at the Pearly Gates were his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Joyce Rollins, his devoted wife for 42 years, his mother and father, John and Ivy Rollins, his older sister and her husband, Johnnie and Bill Hamilton, his youngest sister, Peggy Gandy and his first grandchild, Alisyn Brooke Rollins.

Those left behind to carry his memory are his son, Dale Rollins and wife Carolyn of Amarillo, his daughter Renea Fike and husband David of Granbury, TX, his brother Malcolm and his wife Jan of New Britain, PA, his brother Alan and his wife Judy of McKinney, TX and Margie Fleming, the best friend, confidant, helper and traveling companion that anyone could ask for. Also, his grandchildren, Jonathan Rollins and his wife Sara, Benjamin Rollins and his wife Ashley, Lindi Berry and her husband Steven, Larry Paul Bell and his wife Julie and Lindy’s great grandchildren; Charlie, Claire, Simon, Jay, Emmagene, Allie Rollins and Vaughn and Stevie Berry.

Lindy’s tales of the “Good Old Days” sound anything but good. He was born at the farm house is Stacye, Texas in 1928 and he and his family endured the hardships of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl days and World War II. Lindy was part of “The Greatest Generation” and enlisted in the Coast Guard when he was 17 years old and served in the South Pacific on the island of Guam. After an honorable discharge from the military he enrolled in diesel mechanic school and worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic for 44 years. He had a natural knack for fixing things including, cars, appliances, lawnmowers, etc. He had a lifelong obsession with airplanes which should not be a surprise since he was named after Charles Lindbergh (Lucky Lindy) the first U.S. pilot credited with making a solo, nonstop transatlantic flight. Lindy went on to take flying lessons after he retired as a diesel mechanic. Thankfully, he was not granted his pilot’s license due to his age and the medications he was on. No one in the family would have been brave enough to ride in an airplane he was piloting anyway!

Lindy was a man of simple pleasures. Red beans and cornbread was good enough as long as his family was with him. He worked extremely hard his entire life and was always willing to go out of his way and help others in any way he could. If Lindy saw a motorist stranded on the side of the road, he always stopped to see if he could help. Lindy was a quiet man of few words. Fortunately, his wife Joyce, his friend Margie, his son Dale and his daughter Renea were all blessed with the gift of gab and Lindy was content to just listen. Up until his health began to fail, he enjoyed reading the newspaper every day, and his monthly National Geographic, Smithsonian and Reader’s Digest magazines.

Lindy was a faithful servant at Second Baptist Church from 1964 until 1993. He loved listening to gospel music and looked forward to every Saturday night watching Lawrence Welk and The Gaithers on television.

The family would like to thank the staff at BSA Compassion Home Care, especially Genah, for the excellent care they provided for Lindy for the last years of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to Alzheimer’s Disease Research online at brightfocus.org/ADRyearend.
