

Mary Lee was born in Washington, DC to Mary Ellen and Rex Saunders on April 10, 1937. She moved to Amarillo in 1958 from Springfield, CO. She was a fearless and supportive leader of a Campfire group of girls called the Blue Birds, of which her youngest daughter Stephanie was a member. She gained life-long friendships with several parents through that Camp Fire group. Mary Lee owned Stuart’s Jack & Jill Book Store for 23 years, later changing the name to Encore Books. She was well-loved by the community, and had many friends through the bookstore. Mary Lee loved to serve. She gave selflessly to the community through many endeavors and was able to pair her love of books with serving by being an adult literacy teacher, aiding many adults in learning to read. She was a very devoted sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to everyone. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Mary Ellen Saunders (England) Rex Saunders; Step father, Don England, and her sister Margaret.
