Mattie Marie Porter, 95, of Enid, OK went home to be with her Lord on Monday, July 11, 2022. She passed away peacefully at home where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Richard Davis.
Marie was born December 14, 1926 in Hollis, OK to Sterling and Ruby Walker Payne. She was the eldest of six children and was the last remaining. She was a 1944 graduate of Wellington High School. Marie married the love of her life, Thomas Archie Porter, on August 14, 1945 and celebrated 51 glorious years together before his death in 1997. They made Amarillo their home where they raised three daughters. Marie was a long-time member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of Amarillo for over 50 years and First Baptist Church of Norman, OK for the last five years.
Marie’s love of the Lord radiated through her in everything she did. She loved researching her family and church history, planning family gatherings, and working in the church library; also, she loved obtaining volunteers to help cook and deliver meals to the West Texas University Baptist Student Union and the cast of Texas twice yearly.
Marie always looked forward to the Tri-State Fair every year as she was the Superintendent of the Junior Culinary Division for over 50 years. She raised her daughters to be active in 4-H, teaching them to cook, can, sew, and was always an encourager. She never met a stranger.
Working with the home extension club she loved to serve and work on various projects such as making baby blankets for the Pregnancy Center. She also worked with the Expanded Nutrition Program teaching women to cook with the commodities given them. She loved visiting shut-ins, nursing homes, and witnessing for her Lord. She was one incredible woman who will truly be missed.
Marie was preceded in death by one son, Gary Porter; one daughter, Lanetta Black; one brother, and four sisters.
Marie is survived by two daughters, Deborah Davis and husband Richard, of Enid, OK; Marleen Glasscock and husband Gene, of Amarillo; a sister-in-law, Joyce Payne, of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 20, at 2:00pm at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 555 E. Hastings, with Pastor Michael Carter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Griggs –Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 19, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home.
