

Ruth Smith was born on July 23, 1925 in Davis City, Iowa. Her parents were Earld and Myrta Cox. She had an older brother, Marble Cox. Ruth attended grade school, junior high school and high school in Leon, Iowa, graduating from Leon High School with her diploma. She played the saxophone in the Leon High School marching band. Following high school she worked for Western Union in Chicago, Illinois. She returned to Leon after her brother was killed in WW-II.
Ruth met Ken Smith in Leon, Iowa, and they were married in the Leon Methodist Church on August 24, 1947. They were blessed with four children; two boys and two girls. Ruth was a homemaker and a most loving wife and mother to her husband and children. Ruth lived in Iowa, Kansas, Utah and Texas, moving to Amarillo in 1963.
Ruth enjoyed walking, volunteering, golfing, crafts, ceramics, working jigsaw puzzles, numerous church activities, motor home traveling with Kenneth, dancing, visiting each of her children as often as possible, and seeing our country’s beautiful national parks. Ruth was an avid reader. She loved reading books but her passion was reading her Bible.
She was a member of PEO Sisterhood, Chapter B, United Methodist Women,Tophatters and Starlighters dance clubs. Ruth volunteered for Amarillo VA Hospital, Meals on Wheels of Amarillo for 45 years and was the St. Paul United Methodist Church Librarian. Ruth received the Lifetime Service Award for her 45 years of volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Amarillo. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her honor to Amarillo Meals on Wheels; BSA Hospice of the Southwest or Saint Paul United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband Kenneth Allen Smith; Sons: Bruce Marble Smith and Roger Allen Smith. Daughters: Kathleen Virginia Owca and Debra Ruth Smith. Six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
