March 24, 1935 – April 19, 2025
Mary Alice De Ruyter, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, in Huntington Beach, California, at the age of 90.
Born on March 24, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Mary was the daughter of Howard L. Wilke and Marie Clare Burns. She lived a vibrant and faith-filled life, marked by love, devotion, and a fiery spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
Mary was the proud and loving mother of six children: Lori Graham, Julie A. De Ruyter-Davis, Larry De Ruyter, Chris De Ruyter, Randy De Ruyter, and Terry De Ruyter. She was also blessed with 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply. Her love for family was unconditional, and though she missed those who lived far away, they were always close in her heart.
A devout Catholic, Mary was dedicated to her faith. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and spent over 15 years as a CCD teacher, finding great joy and purpose in guiding others in their spiritual journey. Attending the CCD Congress was something she looked forward to every year, and her commitment to her church community was unwavering.
Mary had a warm, unique personality and a wonderful sense of humor. Her favorite color was red—fitting for her vibrant, passionate spirit. She had a fondness for owls, admiring the way they turned their heads to see you, as if truly taking you in. She also had a need for speed, enjoying fast cars and never hesitating to drive a little faster than she probably should have.
She was well known and loved for her cooking—her Earthquake Cakes, chicken enchiladas, and lasagna were legendary. Those lucky enough to sit at her table never left hungry or without a smile.
Mary was the kind of person who would sneak M&Ms away from her husband with a playful grin, and who offered comfort and strength with just her presence. She gave love freely and completely, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
She will be remembered for her faith, her laughter, her strength, and the way she made everyone feel at home.
A visitation for Mary will be held Monday, May 5, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Rosary will begin at 6:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 8345 Talbert Ave, Huntington Beach, CA 92646.
