Dan never met a stranger. He had a natural way of connecting with people and making them feel welcome, a trait he inherited from his dad and carried throughout his entire life. Whether you knew him for years or had only just met him, Dan had a way of making you feel like a friend.
Dan was hardworking, dependable, and incredibly skilled with his hands. He built a career working with heavy equipment and mechanics, taking great pride in his work and earning the respect of coworkers and friends throughout his career. Many looked to Dan for his expertise, problem-solving abilities, and willingness to help.
Outside of work, Dan loved laughter, good food, time spent with family and friends, and the simple moments that brought people together. One of his greatest joys was his beloved dog, Gus, who brought him companionship, comfort, and pride.
Dan also had a deep appreciation for firearms and enjoyed collecting guns, trap shooting, and the friendships and traditions that came along with those interests. The Izaak Walton League in Bloomfield and the Davis County Fair held special places in his heart, as both were places filled with memories, family connections, and lifelong friendships.
After returning to Iowa from the Chicago area in 2018, Dan was able to reconnect more closely with family and lifelong friends—something that brought meaning and joy to his later years.
Dan fought cancer with determination and grit. After battling one form of cancer, he was faced with another diagnosis. True to who he was, he researched tirelessly, learning everything he could about his disease and pursuing every avenue he could to fight it. Even as the disease took an enormous toll on him in his final months, he continued to face it with resilience and determination.
Though Dan did not openly talk about his faith, near the end of his life he shared that he believed in Heaven and in seeing those he loved again. That quiet faith brought comfort and peace to those closest to him.
More than anything, Dan will be remembered for the way he made people feel. He was loyal, funny, protective, knowledgeable, and deeply loved. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.
He is survived by his sister, Beth Andrew (Petefish), along with extended family members and many friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Ada Helen Petefish and John William Petefish.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Saturday, May 30th, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Ray’s Longbranch in Drakesville, Iowa. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, laughter, memories, and celebrate a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Davis County Fair, American Home Finding Association, or the Izaak Walton League in Bloomfield—organizations and places that held special meaning in Dan’s life.
