Don graduated from Waukee High School in 1960. After high school, he drove a dump truck for a family friend and soon after bought his first truck. He enlisted into the Army National Guard in 1966 and served active duty for 6 years before he was honorably discharged. Following his service, Don created “Donald Abel Trucking”, which he owned and operated until he retired in 2008. Don married the love of his life, Susan Lynne Moseley, on January 8th, 1966, at First United Methodist Church in Des Moines. They were later blessed with their daughter, Christine Lee Abel. Throughout his life, Don loved to drive - he saw much of the country with his family and particularly enjoyed spending time in Texas. He was an active member of the Teamsters Local 90, Auburn Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and the Scottish Rite. Don never met a stranger and was always ready to offer a helping hand to friends, family and neighbors. He was patient, humble, kind and worked hard to ensure his family was cared for with love.
Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan Lynne (Moseley) Abel; his daughter, Christine (Russell Kern) Abel; his grandsons, Donald (DJ) and Jacob; his brother, Charles (Karla) Abel; and many extended family and friends. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Kathrine “Deloris” Abel (Markley) and Richard Marvin Abel.
