

John E. Belew, 93, of Ankeny, Iowa died on November 3rd, 2025, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. John was born on August 5th, 1932, in Stuart, Iowa to Gladys (Trotter) and Lawson Belew. His family moved often, so John attended many central Iowa schools. He spent his senior year of high school at St. Charles High School and graduated in 1950.
In October 1950, John enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War, the last two years of service aboard the U.S.S Sabalo. He was very proud of his time on the submarine and would gladly share his stories.
In June 1955, John married Joyce Bumbarger. They had three children: Debra, Douglas, and Brian. They later divorced.
John worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry for a short time, then joined Western Mutual Insurance Company (now Continental Western) in the claims department. He was employed there for more than 36 years, and managed claims offices in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Iowa.
John was a private pilot and flew for many years. Other interests when he was younger include golfing and attending auctions.
John is survived by his children and their spouses, Deb and Ed Sullivan of Oskaloosa, IA, Doug and Cecilia Belew of Lake Forest, CA, and Brian and Norma Belew of Norwalk, IA; grandchildren, Lindsey Sullivan, Matthew (Kala) Sullivan, Elizabeth (Tom) Zeiders, Amy (Greg) Bush, and Christine (Dan) Wages; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy, and his brother, Herbert.
Inurnment will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to a veterans-based charity of the donor's choice.
